It's all in the breeding and training. Sounds like you got yourself a good one! Wonderful!
Some breeders breed mean dogs to mean dogs to get mean puppies. Many people throw whatever dog with whatever dog and get a wild card puppy that can go any direction. And some breeders breed gentle dogs to gentle dogs and get, yes, gentle dogs! It's not *all* training, as you can see, but it is still very, very important to train them well and early. Seems as though you've done that.
Thank you for supporting a breed that needs people like you!
And for those who think dogs aren't ever born mean, read this...
"Two vital factors to keep in mind as you make your selection are temperament and health. Temperament is a hereditary trait in dogs, although it can be influenced by other external factors. Selection over many generations eventually produced breeds with the correct temperament to pull sleds, follow scent on trails or retrieve game. The inheritance factors of temperament are complex. However, you should never consider breeding a dog with a questionable temperament. You impose a major disservice on both human and canine communities if you produce another generation of skittish or bad-tempered animals."

I hope you gave your "baby" a lot of love and hugs after the attack.
Emergency rooms treat more dog bites from labs than from any other breed. The bad rep that pit bulls get comes from the sort of people who generally own them, not from the dogs themselves. There is a certain caliber of person who owns these dogs as a status symbol. In fact, these dogs can be and most often are, gentle giants.
There is a common myth that as these dogs grow, their brains expand while their skull does not, causing them to become violent due to the pain. Bullsh*t! Aside from becoming sick, these dogs don't just "turn" from being warm, loving family members to being brutal killers.
Your dog sounds like a sweetie pie, and I know it was hard to watch your "baby" being attacked by this shepherd, but you did the right thing. Thank God you didn't get hurt!

Neutering was good on several levels. Congrats on that. I believe any dog is capable of being aggressive no matter the breed. I also believe staffys can be great family dogs if treated and trained properly. I have an eight year old staffy that is great with people. He has never been a problem. Of course I did teach my grand kids you do not mistreat the dog (any dog) or play rough with him. Also when he has enough of you and crawls under the bed to get away from you, LEAVE HIM ALONE.
I have to ask, did you report the attack....I hope.

Of course people make them that way... No dog is born mean, they are trained to be mean and to fight. It's completely NOT the dog's fault whatsoever. It's just some people don't know the whole story and think just b/c pitbulls are trained to fight and that you hear stories of pitbulls attacking or killing on the news, that the whole breed is bad. They don't open their minds fully and don't notice all the other breeds who do the same. So they become fixated on this one breed and as soon as a story comes around, they immediately blame the breed b/c they don't know the whole story. They don't know what really goes on, and that it's the people who make them this way. I had a chow pitbull mix who just died recently (March, 29). He was my best friend in the entire world. But just b/c he had pitbull in him and barked when he saw someone he didn't know (grandpa, aunt, etc) they thought he was a "mean" dog when, really, he was the best dog you could ask for. I taught him 14 tricks/commands too. And it pisses me off that my family was afraid of him and talked bad about him just b/c he had pit in him. And I know that's the reason they didn't like him b/c they straight up said it... But my point is, is that people shouldn't assume a whole breed is bad just b/c of what people have done to SOME of them. Not all pits are bad and no dog EVER is born mean. It depends on how it's treated... I would give you a couple of videos about pitbulls, but unfortunately, I can't seem to find them. It's good that you had control of your dog and he didn't go after the GSD. But protecting your dog would be better than letting the GSD attack him over and over. I wish others would find information and ask about pitbulls like you did before going and assuming things which aren't true. We need more people like you. Good luck and best wishes. =)
EDIT: I found one of the videos. It shows that pitbulls aren't mean... http://youtube.com/watch?v=0dC8BPA0VoI&search=pit%20bull

The Pit Bull has been given a bad rap. They are very loyal to their family and protective. My daughter has two pits and they have been the best dogs she's ever owned. I have two grandchildren and if I thought for a moment they were in danger those dogs would not be there. I owned a Dalmation who we loved very much but after 12 years with her she attacked me and caused alot of damage to my face. Are all dalmations mean? Each dog needs to be judge separtely not by groups. I had a Yorkie who was very mean to other dogs and people. Is the Yorkie breed bad? I love the breed and people need to get over this fear, thanks to the TV it probably won't happen. Good Luck to you and stand by your dog like he does for you. turn your neighbor in for having a violent dog.

Pits are no more aggresive than they are raised to be... The problem is that unlike a lab or other breed when they bite they dont let go! So if a Lab bites your neighbor you have a few stiches..When a pit bites you have a bloody mess!.....I have Euthanized and Cut the heads off of more pits than any other breed to send for rabie checks in my job...And most were family pets!

Pittbulls are wonderful dogs.
Neutering was the rightt hing to do as intact dogs with all the hormones get more territorial and will fight faster tahn with out.
They are just a dominant assertive breed but they were bred for a job that required them to be that way.
People have bred these dog indiscriminently and caused problems with their tempermant. It happens with many breed of dogs. Humans do really stupid things when it comes to dogs.
It is sad i I think there are some really wonderful Pittbulls out there but now people just can not see past the immage they have created.

Hi, I don't believe that every pitbull is violent, because i own a female red nose who i got from a family member, and we both agree that she possibly could of been abused by a previous owner, but since i have had her she is the sweetest dog, she has never growled, snapped, or bit anyone and almost never barks unless she senses someone around but can't see who it is. i have only heard her bark twice and she even let's people hold her puppies that are only a few days old, but even with saying that you still have to be careful and keep a watchful eye just in case.

Pit bulls get a bad reputation because of bad owners. Pit bulls are just like other dogs. If they are trained right they can be just as lovable. They are very power full So when they do bite they can do a lot of damage. A toy poodle can be made to be just as aggressive as a pit bull. But because they are smaller they don't get as much negative attention. It's sad because they are a beautiful dog. I love them.

good for you for having a well trained dog... of any breed. pits are NOT mean dogs... they're just very strong dogs that get a bad reputation. As long as they are well trained they can be wonderful pets. The problem is that people are still breeding them to fight, and when these dogs happen to attack someone they can do TONS of damage simply because of their strength. i'd be willing to bet that more chihuahua's attack people than pits do... but you don't hear about the chihuahuas because they don't do as much damage simply because of their size.

wow...you have a great pet. I believe any dog can be bad with a bad owner. I once had pit and she was a wonderful dog. The best way to have a good dog is to socialize them, so they are good in all kind of situations. My pit especially loved children her height...she seemed to always watch out for them to try to help in some way...I so miss her.
