Calculating the caloric loss of either exercise would be extremely difficult, since there will be a variation of intensity and also the fact that different muscles will be working.

However, it is healthier to run using a treadmill or on a track than running in place. Running in place is basically a complicated way of jumping up and down, which is:-

A)Bad for your back.
B)Does not exercise all the muscles of your leg.
C)Can lead to a herniated disc.

Thus, it is better to run using a treadmill or a track.

Yes and No,

Yes if your Track or treadmill is set to be flat, with no inclination/slope.

Track//Treadmill can have inclination/slope, thus increase the amount of difficulties in the training.

Ps running on the spot may cause more injuries to the lower limbs, as Track/treadmills may have cushions, thus reduce the pounding on the feet.

Good Luck in your Training.

Running on a treadmill or track is preferred. When I do run in place, I kick my knees up very high. Can't do this for very long. This type of running in place is an excellent exercise.

The treadmill has its place for training. It is great if the weather is lousy outside and it is somewhat easier on your joints. Most conveyor belts are cushioned as well. I think you alter your gait when you are on a treadmill, so it isn't quite the same thing.

The problem with treadmills is that they give you a false sense of accomplishment. There is no wind resistance, no heat / cold... it is a very artificial setting. I am told to simulate natural air resistance you'd need to set the incline to about 2%.

I am a big fan of getting outside and running. Treadmills, for me, are boring, but I've known several runners who get nearly 100% of their training done on them. To each their own.

Good luck.
