If the friend is there and you are really uncomfortable, ask if you could talk to her alone for a minute. Then, just ask her if she would like to go to the movies, dinner... wherever. OR... you could do something totally original and cute... Take a cute puzzle, put it together and flip it over. Write on the back, "Would you go out with me?" Or something similar. Take the puzzle apart. Buy a bag of balloons and put a puzzle piece in each balloon. Blow them all up and call her mother. Find a time when she will not be home and explain to her mother that you have a surprise for her and ask if you could bring it by and leave it in her room. Leave the balloons. Wait for an answer. This is a verrrrrrrry cute way to ask her out. I am sure she will love it and appreciate your creativity, so you could get at least one date. Let me know if you do it and how it goes!

If I were you, I would be bold and go get her some very nice colorful flowers and walk right up to her, kiss her on the hand and say," Flowers, for the pretty lady."
When she looks at the flowers in total ahh, you could ask her if she would like to go out with you for dinner and a movie. She will most certainly love the attention from a true gentleman.
