It is unfortunate. Can stem from many things. A need to feel good about themselves by putting someone else down. Insecurity in needing to feel 'normal', thus drawing attention to the differences. Ignorance. Maybe their parents used words like 'retarded'.

God made special needs people, in part, to show us how fortunate we are to be blessed in the way God blessed us. These people are special because they were created by God to teach the rest of us humility, compassion and the Golden Rule.

For several reasons unfortunately...As human beings we generally feel a few things that can cause this. One...We feel a need to be superior...To SOMETHING OR SOMEONE....Generally that falls to those less fortunate than us whether in physical or mental handicap or social or economic circumstances....Two...We as humans have plenty of our own misery and in order to make our own seem less severe it's only natural to laugh at the misfortune of others...No matter how wrong this appears to most of us we all have done it..Such as when a friend runs headfirst into a sign...Or gets kicked in the nuts...Or slips and falls...The first things out of our mouths is usually a laugh even before we ask if they are ok...and in most cases barring the most severe we ask if they're ok WHILE we laugh at them....And third...As humans a lot of us (not all by any means) don't understand the nature of what it is we laugh at...We don't understand how it actually affects the person or their loved ones...SO we don't see anything wrong with laughing. Again this isn't right....However until we become personally affected then we're never going to understand.

This is really sad that people do this. Why they do it is Because they there self have a mental problem and don't even know it. And maybe that don't know that they are hurting that person by doing this. I was at a wal-mart and there was 3 teens making fun of an old woman in a wheel chair. And the longer i watched them do it the madder i got.Well i coulden stand it any longer. I walked up to the ring leader and said to him if you open your mouth one more time or bother that woman one more time ill put my foot up you azz so far we will both be in the hositpal getting my foot took out of your azz. He looked at me real funny then walked up to the woman and told her he was real sorry for being a jerk. Its like no one had ever told him this was not ok to do and when i told him it was like he was a different person. so maybe some of them don't even know its not right to make fun of other people......

One reason is to make themselves feel better.....the other is because they fear what they don't understand.......education is the best resolution.

I have worked with special needs kids and it has always enraged me how the general public responds. How they can as adults stand there and make rude comments about a baby or toddler is beyond my comprehension. What happens to our natural instincts to protect and care for children. What is worse is that these same adults teach their children to do the same thing.

I just thank GOD he didn't give one of these precious babies to those idiots...........

i think it's because they're either scared or they don't undestand. people often ease the tension of reality with jokes, cruel or uncalled for, they do it. but mark the day something happens to them and who's laughing then?
