I was once like you. I really liked this guy who worked in my local pub. He was really popular and got along with everyone, especially the women! I wasn't very confident and thought he would get better offers than me! Just do it....be very formal, respectful and it would help if you presented yourself really well. If you're too shy, find out whom you know who can somehow introduce the two of you then go from there.
