I have done that, but didn't really end up in a different city. Just on unfamiliar roads. I eventually found my way home, but though I could have used a navigation system in my car. It was the only time I have ever thought I needed one.

My experience defined miserable. My husband had been transferred from Santa Barbara, CA to an inland city. My first daughter was four months old and I had a job at a bank. I had taken her to daycare in our neighborhood, as the bank was in a rather bad neighborhood. Well, I missed my exit and thought I would just take the next one and travel back to Bernard Street. I was completely wrong in that assumption. The road I wound up on was two miles north of Bernard and it wasn't rocket science for me to determine that I was in a very bad neighborhood. And this road seemed like the yellow brick road or something. I expected the Tin Man to come waltzing along with Dorothy and Toto at any moment. It was a winding, twisting road and at about every corner there was a stop sign. Well, I know you are supposed to stop at a stop sign but after three stops, I gave that up. I am a snowflake and I ovbiously did not fit into the group. Clusters of people who looked very sinister were staring all along the road. At one stop, someone left the curb and tried to open the door. That was it for stop signs. I was blowing all of them in my V8 5 litre Mustang and hoping to high heaven that I wouldn't run somebody down or run out of gas. I had people chasing after me on foot and I got a lucky break, finally. A cop pulled me over for speeding! After explaining my situtation, I still got a ticket and he told me how to get to Bernard Street. I didn't even care about the ticket! I was just glad to get stopped for the first time in my life! Well, as time went by I learned my way around and NEVER went to the yellow brick road again.

Having commuted 45+ miles over the past 18 years to several locations in my state, I have tried to find "alternate routes" wherever I go - usually when I found myself stuck in a jam. I always carry detailed county maps to help me find my way, and I've enjoyed many scenic trips as a result!

i was in the mountains. in august. it was hot and i meant to stay near my car. i got heat exhaustion and got disoriented. i was thirsty. i could hear a rushing river and an hour or so later when i found it i drank all i could and sat there and sang kum-bay-a even thought i dont know what the hell it means, then i found fresh mountain lion tracks and got scared so i barrelled straight up the mountain through deadfall and devil's weed (very thorny) until i came to a road. a lady picked me up a half an hour later but i bought a compass and a water bottle the next day!

all the time.

I think to myself: "oh! what an excellent way to get to know the area" and I end up getting lost. Especially trying to find a quicker way to campus. It's a ten mile drive, but it takes 45 minutes with all the traffic. I've tried dozens of routes, but there's no better way of getting there.

All the time - the worst was when I was a kid, and stuck in Pasadena on one way streets. I wasn't supposed to away from diving practice, so the stess was horrible thinking I'd get caught!!!
