Mum always like to brew chinese herbal medicine/ tonic for my family. Sometimes she'll make us drink them when we are sick! If we were to take the prescribed medicine from the western doctor, say panadol, will they react to each other?

If the chinese doctor is thorough, he should know what kind of herbs were put in the medicine and can tell mother. The instructions for use that accompany your western medication (e.g. panadol) can tell you which substances can interfere with the effectiveness of your pills. This will also include herbal substances or even grape fruit juice! However, not yet all herbal substances have been combined with "modern" medicine so not all interactions are already known. Just make sure to carefully read instructions for use or ask the Chinese docter if he knows (maybe other patients told him of side effects)

DO NOT TAKE THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT GETTING SPECIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT BOTH TREATMENTS!

Herbal medicines, be it teas, powders, pills, etc. while derived from natural sources are active and effectice due to the specific chemical compounds found in them. Western medicines are usually a purified form of the active chemical. In other words, they are functionally no different from one another and you do not want to accidentally overdose thinking that herbal medicines are 'different' from medicines produced in a factory.

That being said, panadol (or acetaminophen) is generally pretty innocuous, although you never want to take it with alcohol or wit a host of other pain relievers. See the following webpage for some examples:

Either way - ask your doctor first!

Ask your doctor. There are a lot of interactions between herbal medicines and scientific medicines. Why wouldn't there be? There are interactions between food and scientific medicinces.

Take care with those Chinese herbs. Many of them are contaminated with both prescription drugs and heavy metals.

Its not too gd to take these together. Afterall they are both medicine even though chinese medicine is made up of herbs. They may react with each other and cause problems. If you want to take them together, take them 2 hrs apart.

P.S. thats what my chinese physician told me....

It depends on what and for what that medicine cure for. You must know how that medicine work on your body. For nerve remedy, you shouldn't take them together.
