My husband is on a health kick and about a year ago he woke up and said "no more cigarettes, no more soda, and no more chocolate." I'm very proud of his determination, because he hasn't even had an urge for those three things... even though he was regularly smoking, drinking soda, and eating chocolate when he quit.

Even though he is eating more healthy, he's starting to get the hubby pooch in his tummy. Someone told him that a very moderate chocolate intake can actually be good for you, that it makes you happy and more likely to be active. Anyone have any info to back this up?

MILK chocolate doesn't have the same properties as dark chocolate-- maybe it's processed differently.

And I avoid alkali-processed chocolates (read the label) as the beneficial fats are stripped away.

But, DARK Chocolate possesses many health benefits:

It's lower in sugar than milk chocolate.

It increases the amount of phenylethylamine (PEA) in the body, which improves mood. During stress, this body chemical is reduced -- chocolate helps to restore it. This is one reason women crave it during menstruation.

It has tannins and phenols, both powerful anti-inflammatories and antioxidants, great for him if he is lifting weights and wants to stay young.

So, he can add it back to his diet in moderate amounts -- 2 to 4 ounces a day -- as dark chocolate, as a treat -- in fact, that amount is recommended by many doctors now, in addition to green tea, raisins etc., all for their healthy properties...

Good Luck :)

The worst things in the chocolate are the added refined sugar and cow's milk. Chocolate has caffeine but not much and the anti-oxidants in the chocolate make the caffeine not as bad. The anti-oxidants in the chocolate are similar to the ones in green tea and they are good for the cardiovascular system.

There is even a health product in the form of a chocolate snack called Chocomaca. See this site for more on it.

Yes, chocolate is good for you. It improves your mood, it helps to keep your heart healthy (and a chocolate or two before sex is a good aphrodesiac), and it tastes wonderful, and after all it is the food of gods...But it also can contribute to that ring around the middle, so damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Sure, search through the medical news at yahoo. Small amounts of dark chocolate are good for you. Chocolate is healthy, it's the sugar, fats and other crap that's added to the chocolate that's bad for you.

In moderation, yes.
Dark chocolae is better for you and also contains anti-oxidants. Chocolate is also high in magnesium which helps your body absorb and use calcium better.
A great mood buster. They say it can actually increase a sexual mood also.
