Maybe because your version of NT is not compatible with the FAT of your floppy disk.
Try a Check Errors in the properties menu, or applications menu of Windows, and try opening it in the DOS prompt.

all the answers you have so far could be true
What I have ran into is that the lining off the disk sticks to the surface of the disk slowing down the access time causing it to time out and giving error or reformat errors. if you have a can of compress air I suggest that you take the disk in hand move back the protective cover and hold it back and gie the surface a blast of air on both sides then let the cover close and use a pen or something to spin the metal hub a little then put it back in and see if you have any luck if it said formmat again then you can repeat everything over and over till your satified of the out come or give up if it is helpless you got a 50/50 chance

Are you using the same computer that you typed them on? Sometimes you have to use the same computer or it makes a difference if you typed it on windows 2000 and then try to open it on windows 98. Just depends, someone would really have to be there to help you in person. You can try renaming the document with a .doc at the end.

the disk is indeed corupted, what you can do:
get norton utilities and run norton disk doctor (ndd32) on it. it will atempt to recover all it can , there are other ways.....but more complex....for desperate situations.
Mail me if you don't succed.
hope this helps
