Wish them luck and good fortune, and hope that they can make it through this life. It really confuses people when you wish them well, especially if they don't understand why you are doing it.

As for people who are "thick", understanding and empathy work well. If you are attempting to make a coherent argument and they are not following, it gives you a chance to bone up on your debate skills, trying to present things in a way that everyone can understand. If that doesn't work, smile and thank them for the opportunity to better yourself and move on.

Ungrateful people are different. They have been hurt somehow in their lives and need nothing more than a smile and nod. If they have been given the opportunity to be grateful and have refused, we need to acknowledge the fact that they are in pain and unable to emit gratitude. Reminders help though.

It helps everyone when we all try to be more gracious in our dealings with other people. If all else fails, a nice cup of tea helps to calm down and get perspective.

Treat everyone with respect and with fairness. Lead by example. Be calm and don't lose your cool. Remind your self that somewhere in this world there is probably a mother that loves them. Ask God to give you strength. Pray for your enemies. Don't take anything personally - get a thick skin. If they are very bad - report their behavior to the proper authorities.

Don't waste your time or energy trying to educate the ignorant sort of people who don't have the decency or manners to be grateful for things.
Some people are just so stuck in their mould that there is no point even trying to do anything about it other that spend your time on those who do actually appreciate you.

Say, "You are thick and ungrateful. Stay out of my way." Then turn on your heel and stomp off.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
