Next summer I'm going to basic training... I'm not sure where yet, but I know I'm going as long as I pass the audition into the US Army band. Anyone have any advice for me? I'd love advice from anyone who's been through basic, but especially other women how have been through it.

Next summer I'm going to basic training... I'm not sure where yet, but I know I'm going as long as I pass the audition into the US Army band. Anyone have any advice for me? Now I want to go, so don't anyone else tell me to fail the audition. I'd love advice from anyone who's been through basic, but especially other women how have been through it. It would be nice to get the perspective of someone whoe's had the experience.

Since you have a year to prepare, you should be in good shape before you leave. My advice is that you start doing physical training on your own now. Push ups, sit ups, pull ups, running, weights, and anything else that you can think of to strengthen your body. If you are physically prepared for Basic, then you will be more able to contend with the mental and emotional abuse that you will suffer. I would also suggest that you familiarize yourself with firearms early. Learn how they feel when they go off, how they sound, and most importantly, how different fire arms operate. Learn to break them down and clean them properly. If you have this info before you leave, then you will be more prepared when you begin this in basic.
Learn to eat fast, and prepare yourself for a three meal, no snack day. If you are used to eating three meals and two snacks per day you will feel hungry all the time at basic. If you usually skip breakfast, you will feel weighted down during the morning hours at basic, and find yourself lacking the energy to make it through till lunch. I also suggest that you learn to eat standing up (the last ones in the lunch room earn kitchen detail), so you will want to go (with your tray while eating) from the food line to the exit line.
Now, of everything that I have said, the most important is the physical aspect. If you are physically unprepared, you will have a much harder time with basic...
Good Luck

Its a mind game....and will be over in 8 weeks or however long boot camp is these days.
All the yelling and stress have a purpose as well as the nit picky minutia.
It might seem like some hell hole while you are there but after you are finished you will laugh about it.
That is , if you are not a non hacker.
Then it can be pretty miserable.
The things you gonna have to do in the army band will probably be harder than boot camp.
But millions have gone through boot camp and lived to tell the tale.
Don't worry about it

Don't cry!
Basic is pretty tough so you need to get in shape and do a lot of running, push-ups and pull-ups!
Find someone who will take you to the range and let you fire a 30/30 bolt action rifle, there are no guns in the military, at targets up to 300 yards away.
Do a lot of aerobics and get used to carrying something that weighs about 9 pound. Get a back pack and go hiking in the mountains with some weight in it , Buy a compass and learn to read it, and you will be ready!

Did you know that everyone in the band either beats or blows? Basic is a cake walk I went 10 years ago and it was fun I enjoyed it and learned alot. Just go willing to learn. Basic now days are designed to hug and kiss you.

best thing to do is " LISTEN " to what the di's say and do it the 1st time correctly. start running and doing pull ups, push ups and sit ups now. if you know some one that has an ar-15. get them to teach you how to break it down and learn how to break down the weapon and keep doing it over and over untill you can do it in your sleep.. if you dont know any one. go by a gun store/shop and ask them to show you and tell them that your going into the army. this will give you a advantage and keeps you out of the spot light. if you dont know how to shoot. take a shooting class.

Do your best, I hope you succeed. The best advice I can give you is this: Luck is what happens when preparation meets oppurtunity. You are half way there, be prepared. My son is in the Army. Brave people like you, make this a GREAT country, God bless.

Keep your head up, pay attention. Make sure you don't get lost in all the commotion going on, stay in your own world as much as possible. That place can make a person crazy if you are weak minded!

Don't ask questions, and don't talk too much. remain a fly on the wall. Don't do anything stupid. Some people really have a problem with that. Just don't make it easy for your DIs to put a face to your name.

Pay attention during BRM. Just because you're primarily an Army musician doesn't mean you're not a soldier. Learn how to handle, operate, and MAINTAIN your weapon.
