If your moving to another country do you think you should have to learn the language of the country before you can be a resident?

It seems to me that people will move to your country who cant speak the language and then expect you to speak their language.

I moved to Japan to teach English and I didn't speak a word of Japanese before I came.

Now I am quite conversational.

I think it would be helpful to speak at least a few basic phrases. Enough to "get around." Then you can build on that once you arrive.

I think you should want to and try to.

A functional use and understanding of a / the language of the country is necessary for work, socializing, dealing with bureaucracy, doctors, schooling etc. And if you can't be bothered learning the language to a functional level, why should that country allow you to to stay permanently ?

There are of course exceptional circumstances...but those circumstances should be the exception - not the rule.

You should start learning the language before moving there but I doubt you can be fluent until a few years later. You have to live there to really learn the language.

I think I at least should have tried to learn a little - but it´s always easier to learn the language when you live there. So take a language course as soon as you are settled.

I think you should at least learn the basic stuff like common phrases and local customs.

From then on, being immersed in the country will be your best language "teacher."

yes it is a must if you want to be able to communicate well with the people, thus learning more about the country and its culture. Also it helps you live easier in a strange new country.:)
