The domestic Chinese airlines ROCK...they are good and you will get REAL MEAL even on a 90 minute flight...and the food is TASTY...
Anyhow, the fares are cheapppbut be aware to ask for an aisle seat..as the seats are smaller and more cramped...
From a travel agent who's been there

Spring Airlines offers cheap flights domestically. They do not have meal service on the plane. http://tour.china-sss.com/fight.asp Being able to read Chinese is useful for flight booking. Also you need to have a Chinese bankcard that can do on-line transactions. I used this to fly from Shanghai to Guilin for 610 one way and 480 (or close to that) for the return.

Depending on which is your destination town/city, AND, time of day of the travel, you may get discounts up to 70% from the full price.
In low seasons, air ticket prices can go as low as 500Yuan (60USD) to travel one way from Beijing to Guangzhou! Normal price would be 1200Yuan.
There was a budget airline but it did not do well. I think it is closed down now. If not, it is operating between 2nd-line cities only.

Within China travel is not cheap unless you get the discount rate. Even so, it adds up. A one hour flight to Shanghai will cost $60 at the 70% discounted rate. To get that you have to wait until about two weeks before the flight, and it's never guaranteed, though I've never had a problem.

China's own airlines are as "budget" as you can get for internal travelers (for after all, most of their own people cannot afford exorbitant rates). For 80 or 100 bucks, you can travel far and wide.
