Racer bikes or road bikes---choose TREK, LITESPEED,Colnago or Giant.In mountain bikes----get ROCKY MOUNTAIN, Titus, Santa Cruz or Ellsworth. Select if you intend for cross-country, freeriding, trail-riding, or downhill slamming---the bikes have their specific features that cater to the rider's prowess.

trek and gt are crap.
Specialized and Kona.... end of disscussion.
Specialized has a huge range of prices and bikes. They all are very reliable but they make some more affordable than others.
Kona Is just as good as specialized but they dont have a wide variety of cheap bikes. Very realiable like specialized and full of quality components.
If you get a cheaper specialized (hardrock, rockhopper) the first you wanna replace is the pedals with something slightly better like kona jackshit pedals. Although they arent the best, they're $30 and they grip your feet just as good as any $100 pedal.
i have a specialized hardrock sport because i have no money but i can kick my friend's butt (which is sitting on a really expensive stumpjumper) while mountain biking...
the verdict: kona or specialized. If your bike shop has both kona bikes and specialized bikes, try them both out and see which one feels better. if your bike shop only has one or the other, get the one that they have.

I would have to say Trek and GT bikes, they'll set you back some greenbacks, but worth it in the long run, and they have some Mondo ranges in the PI, have not been there in years, great place

Road trek mtb GIANT its the best nowadays. Kona Gt they are old brands.
