I work as a caregiver in an assisted living apartment complex. If your parents aren't in need of 24/7 medical care this type of arrangement would be less traumatic than a trip to the nursing home. That seems so final. The apartments consist of a living room, 1 or 2 bedrooms, bath and a kitchenette. Meals in the dining room are included in the rent but tenants have the option of continuing to cook their own meals. Activities are planned and if needed transportation to appointments is provided. As a caregiver I help where help is needed. Washing up and showers, laundry, a steady hand for someone with walking difficulties/wheelchairs and helping with medication reminders. You can't beat yourself up about being unable to care for you parents and don't let anyone here tell you otherwise or make you feel guiltier than you already do. Anyone here who cuts you down has never walked in your shoes. I have, maybe that's why I do this kind of work. Please do some research and discuss with your parents doctors the feasibility of this kind of arrangement. Best of luck and hang in there. You only want what is best for them :)

You don't tell them that, you keep them and stay close to them becuase now is when they need you the most. It is your time to pay them back for what they did for you when you were a little baby. Remember you won;t stay young for ever and one day someone might be wondering how to put you in a nursing home or even worse, how to just dump you far away becuase nursing homes are not cheap or..how to pull the plug on you which at that point they will probably be doing you a favor since they don't care for you anyway after all the love you give them and now that is how they pay you back. So, be careful with your actions, don't do to others what you wouldn't like others to do to you.

Your parents took care of you, and now when they need your help you are just going to put them in a nursing home ? Do you know what goes on at nursing homes ? Its not pretty ! Find someone that will come to your house and take care of them.

Sit them down on the couch and tell them that they should go and live in a nursing home, not b/c you dont want to take care of them but b/c if something should happen then the people that work in nursing homes are better equipt.

Who decided its time? Are they mentally incompetent? Are they in danger? Do you have to go help them with things and just don't want to go any more? Just why do you want them in a nursing home? Why you think they should be in one will determine how you tell them or if they should even go. Little more info please. There are lots of different types of assistance out there to help people stay in their homes as long as possible. Nursing homes are the last stop before death.

unless they absolutely cannot care for themselves, you dont worry about something like that. You can hire a nurse (which would be cheaper) to come and stay at there home during the day or something. Or if not a nurse, someone who can come in and help them cook, clean, go to the store for them, you know be there with them through the day. But if its so bad that your having to care for them around the clock, then you just tell them, be honest and up front about it. Tell them you love them, and so on and so fourth, but its too much for you. (if you have siblings make one of them tell them)

I don't know the circumstances, but I would hope you could find a better alternative than a nursing home. Might as well..... never mind. Yeah, right, Jim. They'll live longer. Longer than what? A head on collision? At least in the collision they wouldn't suffer.

no one can tell you what to do, they are not in your shoes.
my aunt spent the better part of 2 years caring for her mother until she could no longer do it on her own.
the nursing homes are there to help.
my aunt comes to the home daily and is very happy with the care. when you are still very involved in your parents lives after they go to the home, it will help a lot.
talk to the family physician for more info.

there is no time for anyone to go to a nursing home. You only send people there you want to die. I would never put anyone I loved in a nursing home. i do not want to be put in a nursing home. Do YOU?
