The lock means that the creator of the PDF has applied security preventing you from doing certain actions with the PDF file.

If you go to File > Document Properties, then click on the Security tab you can see what permissions you have with the file.

OK. If you have only one CD-ROM you need to do this.

A) right click on centre of desktop - select NEW - FOLDER and name it.

1) Put the CD you want to copy in the drawer and if it auto-runs, just exit the screen.

2) Click Start - Run and type EXPLORER and click OK

3) In the left pane of the new window left-click the + sign to the left of 'My Computer'.

4) Hit the Down Arrow on the keyboard until the CD is selected (highlighted)

5) Left-click in the RIGHT pane of the window (not on a file or folder - just a white or blank area to select that pane) and press Ctrl+A together. This will select all of the files on the CD. When they are blue (highlit) right-click in a blue bit and choose 'Send To...' then select the folder on the Desktop which you created earlier. The files from the CD will be in that folder.

6) Remove CD and insert a blank disk to write the folder to.

7) Locate the folder on Desktop, select, right click and choose 'Send To...' then choose D drive or which ever drive letter your CD writer is ...ok?

Now I am tired and going to bed.

You can get a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader from adobe.com.

It'll allow you to read the pdf files.

It could be that the files have been set up when they were created to stop you selecting text and copying it. This can be done for security/copyright reasons. This is certainly an option with Adobe Distiller which creates PDF files

Is there a golden lock at the bottom of your Acrobat reader screen? If yes, then your file is secured to prevent editing/copying.

Try third party PDF readers that will ignore this. Try some of these... http://www.hsinlin.com/software/pdf.html

Edit:
Seems you need a password remover. Try "PDF Password Remover v2.5" from http://www.verypdf.com/pwdremover/index.htm.

From the menu: Tools -> Select Tool.
Or from the icon on the toolbar, next to the hand icon.

Then you should be able to select Edit -> Copy from the menu, or CTRL-C, to copy the text to the clipboard.

Adobe will not allow you to copy from it's content without a full blown editing Adobe product. The quickest and best fix around this is to "print screen, then paste." :o)

Forget it man, or just try some utility to crack the protection on the pdf file, so that, you can copy the text from the pdf file.
