Kidney disease is really serious and can lead to a progressively deteriorating condition called chronic renal failure. First, you should read up on kidney disease and renal failure in cats, and ask your vet what the cause of the kidney disease is. How far along it is? Did your vet do a full blood work-up? What steps can yo take to make sure your cat suffers no more damage? (For example, cats should not have onions in their food ever).
Please make sure your kitty always has enough water. and if he/she is losing weight quickly it could be a sign of dehydration or some other serious underlying problem. Hopefully, if you get a lot of knowledge you can head off more problems in the future. If your cat needs a kidney transplant in the future, he/she must still be in relatively good health and diseases like cancer should be ruled out.

I am not a vet, but my favorite cat of all time had to be put to sleep early this year. It was very traumatic for me, but I could not give him sub-Q (subcutaneous injections of fluid) every day and watch him melt into a skeleton. I really hope you get everything on a smooth track before it gets worse.

The kidneys are the organs that help clean toxins out of the blood. Kidney disease means that they are not working well. Ask your vet about what kind of diet changes you can make to help reduce the strain on the kidneys - the vet may have suggestions for particular brands of cat food, or vitamins or special foods that can help them.

Cats in Kidney failure need to be on a special diet such as science diet k/d or EVD renal diet. You must keep them on this food forever. Let the vet do their job and properly work up and recommend a treatment.
