1st- check if he has ticks or fleas
2nd-Check for rashes, crusts, or overall reddening of the skin

It may be just ticks or fleas, with which you can treat with a tick and flea shampoo and monthly application of frontline. If there are not ticks and fleas visible, but he still scratches at a significant amount of time, he may have an allergic reaction - it may be to his shampoo or food. Worse, is that he may have a parsitic mange, this occurs when dogs hair starts falling off and have blister-like wounds in some parts of the skin, also a noticeable redding of the skin is evident. If this is the case you need to go to your vet to perform a skin test to determine what parasite has been activated. It may be demodecosis or demodex, a naturally occuring parasite (also present in humans) that acts up when the dog is stresses. This is not contagious but must be treated early on. Treatment includes an overload of antioxidant vitamins and immune system boosters, with weekly medicated baths (for 4 to 6 weeks) performed by a veterinarian. It may also be a sarcoptic mange, which, is contagious and the dog must be separated from other dogs and humans alike and be treated with vitamins and medicated baths among others.

Apart from fleas or ticks, your dog might be a hairy one and your location, too hot for him. For exampple, Russian ogs or German Shepherds have hard time sttling in a hot area, especially whn they are hairy.

It's better to take the dog to a good Vet and se what he suggests. He'd suggest a medicine for getting rid of ticks and fleas.

Look in his ears, take a q-tip and VERY LIGHYLY brush the inside of his ear with it. If there are little black "pepper like" spots on the q-tip, then he has fleas. If he does take him to a vet for a flea shampoo. Dont forget to clean your house thouroughly, carpets, blankets, wash everything down.

Your dog might have ticks or fleas. If he/she scratches his ear area, he/she might be infected with ear mites. You should take him to see a vet :)
