In early June, I purchased a one-way ticket on US Airways from their website. On the day of the flight, I used their website to check in, and it told me I was eligible for an upgrade, so I accepted. This was a free upgrade, and I was able to pick a first class seat for my boarding pass. The mystery is that I have not flown on US Airways before, and it has been a long time since I flew on America West, which is now owned by US Airways. I doubt there are enough America West miles kicking around to make me worthy of an automatic upgrade. When I asked someone at the service counter, they looked at my record and did not see anything obvious that would explain why I was offered an upgrade. So, there are a few questions here:
1. Has this exact situation on US Airways happened to anyone else?
2. Any guesses as to why their reservations site did this?
3. Since I won't know if I'll be upgraded until I check in online the day of the flight, should I try this again to see what happens?

I should mention that I provided my America West frequent flier number when I booked the reservation.

You probably had enough from America West to get upgraded. With the merger everything is integrated. Hey...get a free upgrade....take it, I would say thank you and thats it, no questions! Its not like they will come back to you and tell you to pay the difference. If it was a system error, thats thier problem.

Pull up your FF account with America West and look at the history. Other than that, consider it a thank you from the airline for your business and dont worry about it.

I worked for Delta for many years and the medallions will bug you about upgrades if they were not preapproved. So, congradulations! If First Class is offered, Id take it and not say anything. Beats sitting in coach any day of the week!

They may have needed a coach seat for someone and instead of bumping someone out of coach, they bumped you up to first class because you had a ticket you purchased from them and even a little bit of frequent flier miles. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. People who purchase using resellers like Expedia and Hotwire don't usually qualify for any upgrades, but the airline wants their money anyway; it's better for them to move you into first class than to reject the person who wants the coach ticket--- now they have two paid customers instead of one. I wouldn't count on it happening again, but it doesn't hurt to continue purchasing tickets directly with the airline and checking in online!

because u.s. airways rocks! i wouldnt try it again though....

the same thing happened to me the first time i went on u.s. airways, only a little different

our flight was delayed and we had another flight to catch in another airport so.... unfortunately... they had to put us on a first class, direct flight (no changing planes) to our destination. It was tough but i got through it. =)

I love U.S. Airways, and i'm glad to see they're upgrading other people.

Obviously, in an unusual fit of sensibility, US Air recognized you for the truly cool person you are and realized that you inherently deserve to fly first class all the time, no matter what!

there was probably a lot of people travelling on staff tickets that day, so in order to squeeze them all in to economy, they upgrade full fare ticket passengers to make room for the staff.Think yourself lucky, sometimes they upgrade the staff instead!
