Just got a new kitty 8wks old. Already have an 8 mnth old cat. (Baby) older cat hissing and batting at (Daisey) new kitty. I know cats are territorial animals. I had 1 cat when younger and took in a new one. Dont remember them fighting. I have seperate litter boxes and food dishes in differ rooms.

Thank you everyone. Now do you think it is a good idea to leave them alone at night while we sleep. Remember this is only their second night together

when we adopted an adult cat and already had one at home, our vet told us it would be about six months before they fully became accustomed to each other. If your cats are younger, it might happen faster, since your older cat has had less time to be the "boss"

hey, do not worry in 3 or 4 days more than likely you will think they were born together! usually the first day is hissing running away batting at the other kitten, the next day is less hissing more staring still running away or batting the other one, the 3rd day the older cat realizes jeesh i guess this one is staying, so they may start the butt sniffing routine with still hissing involved, but do not worry this is a good thing, by the fourth day you will probably wake up to them running and playing or sleeping together! i am pretty sure on this since i have been, loving and living with cats since i was 3 and i am 50 now! eme if you need anymore help or just want to talk cats! i also have a yahoo 360 page and it is for cats too. god bless i am kittywoman16@yahoo.com and my email is iadorecats1955@netscape.com

This can vary widely as each cat has its own personality. Ive had some cats never really fit in and others that were ok with a new cat in a week or so. be sure to give the established cat plenty or affection and dont scold it too hard for trying to maintain its position in the house as the only cat. hopefully time will help out. If you live where there is a Petsmart store you might ask someone there if they know how to help this situation. Also i always bathed the new kitten so it lost some of its other cat scent.

Do not leave them alone in the same room for a week or so; Baby might hurt Daisey; if she's 8wks old, she may be able to defend herself but just in case...
Separate litter boxes are good, if you have room, I didn't have and my cats had to share one litter box, however it didn't turn out to be a problem; I can even say it helped them get used to each other more easily.
If you're grooming them, try grooming them with the same brush, they'll get used to each other's smell.
In two wks you may let them feed from the same dish, I have two dishes now but they don't care who's eating from which one, they use both of them. :)
I can't say mine get along well, but they do not fight either. They just live their own lives. :))

Yes cats are territorials but you have to remember they are living with you and you are not living with them. Once the cat realizes the situation is not changing he will enjoy the fact that he has someone to play with. The hissing is normal don't worry. Give it a couple of days sometimes it may take about three weeks or so until you recognize the difference. Pay them no attention and let them live there lives........yes of course THE space has been invaded as far as she sees it....... I wouldn't introduce their own little boxes or food or water dishes. let them share and watch how quickly they become friends

ur kitties may never get along, i had 2 cats and when we brought home a new kitty 1 liked it and the other hated it. but if they ever do like each other it will take a little while longer. As for when you sleep, i would put them in seprate rooms and fix them up to go to sleep (move food and 1litterbox in w/ each cat), cuz u don't want them fighting while ur not there to break it up.

Wow, did you pick a doozy! Cats are very territorial, but they can also surprise you at the strangest times. One thing you can do, and it's very easy, is to get two clean hand towels. Use one of them to do a dry rub down on Daisey, the other to do a dry rub down on Baby. Place the hand towel with Baby's scent under Daisey's food and water bowl. Then place the hand towel with Daisey's scent under Baby's food and water bowl. In that way, whenever they go to eat, they'll get used to the other cat's scent in no time!

It may take a couple of days but they will warm up to each other.Right now Baby doesn't understand why this new kitty is in her home. I brought in a new kitten and my 2 cats were pissed off like crazy but after a couple of days they acted like it was their baby. So don't fret just hang in there.

Give them time, they need time to get to know each other, and for them to sort out who is the 'boss', they will then work it out from there.

usually same gender will have big possibility to fight, but different gender will get along faster.
