I posted a question about a month ago regarding my car stereo not working after the alternator was replaced. I got a comment from another yahoo user as follows:
"That's not what the problem is. If it worked BEFORE the alternator and now it doesn't work...then its because it locked up when they disconnected the battery... its an anti-theft thing and you have to have the code to get it back on."
How would I go about finding the code and putting it in when the stereo doesn't even turn on? I'd appreciate any help with this.

The stereo was bought at best buy a couple of years ago. And I did just find the manual for it. I'll check it out too.

Another thing, the unit must get some power because when I turn off the ignition I can hear the warning tone that reminds me to remove the face plate "to prevent theft". It's audible, but faint.

if you left a cd in the player its under a security lock to prevent damage to the unit itself...if you bought it under a year ago, there is a 1 yr manufacturer warranty on it, take it back to Best Buy where they can look up the exact date you purchased it if you payed by check or credit card and if its under the MFG WARR, send it to their service center where they can unlock it and send back, typically under a week...if not, i believe you can send to service for 24 bucks or something...

If it is a factory stereo on a late model car that you bought new, then there is a good chance that your dealer gave you a little card that has a number on it. Sometimes they put this in the packet that you walked out of the dealership with, and sometimes they just put it in your glove box. If you can not find this number, then there is a chance that the dealership can reset it for you...for a fee probably.
The only problem I see is that if you don't have any power at all to the stereo (clock isn't on, no security warning on the display, etc.) then they may have blown a fuse in your fuse pannel when the alternator was installed. Even worse, if the fuse the radio is attached to did not blow when there was a surge like it was supposed to, then your radio may be burned up. Either way, it sounds like you need professional help. Stop by your local stereo shop, or dealership...whichever is more convenient. It doesn't cost anything to ask them a question. Good luck.

Please post some details of the head unit's make and model. I used to own a Kenwood head unit which had a 4 digit code that you had to input. It would ask you to do it with the lit up screen.
If pretty much nothing shows up, then you are dealing with a power issue. I would take the head unit out, and check all of the wires.
Though this next comment more than likely didn't happen to you, but a friend of mine had an aftermarket head unit (also a Kenwood).... one day while driving through a storm, lightning struck the ground near him, and some how fried the unit. He took it to an audio shop where they told him it was impossible until opening and finding everything fried.
Anyways, if you aren't getting anything out of it. You need to check the wiring first.

You might need a code because of anti theft, but I some what doubt it. If the ground wire was unhooked or knocked off of where it was grounded to... That could be the problem. You can also check the fuses. Often times after changing certain part on a car, it can cause fuses to pop.

circut to the battery could be burnt,, fuse could be blown.. or your stereo could've been fried :\ ... or.. there may be a small reset button behind the face (if it is a removable face) to reset it... check the stereo's manual.. if u don't have it, u can find it on google.com by searching for the stereo's brand & model number..
good luck, i hate it when i can't have my tunes

if it is a factory installed stereo, came with the car, not from wal-mart, or any other aftermarket place, a dealership will be able to help you obtain the codes, if in fact that is the problem.
good luck - i can't stand to drive without music
