Can anybody elaborate the Christian biblical theme in the movie? JRR Tolkien was a devout Christian, and supposedely the book contains many references to the bible. I would like an expert to share that with me. Thank you.

I personally am not Christian. But, I do love Lord of the Rings.....Gandalf I know is viewed as a huge Christian reference in the story...you know the whole dying and coming back to life...and being the magical savior guy. lol.

While there may be a Christian theme (good vs evil, obviously) it is based on early Germanic mythology and gave him a chance to express his lifelong study of philology (which explains the poetry in Elvish and Dwarvish and his naming conventions). The mythology explains the many races encountered such as Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Goblins, Ents, etc. Also remember that he started writing just before or during World War II, so Hitler, Nazism and World War II are a big influence.

All of this needs to be understood before trying to understand any Christian themes. How does his portrayal of Elves and Dwarves differ from his historical sources (the original Teutonic myths)? How does his quest differ from quests in the myths?

You speak of the movie as opposed to the written trilogy. That adds an added layer of complexity because what ended up on the screen has been filtered through the director and the movie studio. I really recommend reading the trilogy, then coming back to ask this question with a truer understanding or familiarity of what Tolkien was writing.

Good Vs ultimate Evil. It can be compared to any religion. Although LOTR is much better of the two fictional works, the other being the bible. None of the Christian hypocricy in it. No incest or going to hell for not accepting jesus.

Other than the fact that good always overcomes evil is the only theme I could guess.

Actually, this theme is more evident in "The SIlmarilion" than in LOTR
