I never feed my dog corn or by-products. We stick with Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice. It has no by-products, soy, eggs, dairy products, sunflower oil, or grains such as wheat, barley, corn, or oats.

Many products use corn based formulas for dogs, but this is generally regarded as a cheap "filler" for their food. I believe rice based formulas are easier for the dog to digest.
You really should do some research on feeding your dog dried dog food. Here is a link that provides some illuminating information. If you have the money, a raw meat diet is better for your dog's health in the long run, but if you don't then just try to be cognizant of what products might be better than others for your dog.

Rice based is better. Corn is a filler, it is not completely digested by dogs..... or people for that matter. It simply takes up space in the dog's stomach. Rice is a digestible grain, and so the dog gets more nutritionally from these foods.

I agree with all the answers so far, but let me ellaborate a little. Rice is a better and more digestable ingredient, but be sure to look at the wording, as corn gluten is also nutritious. Often corn (i.e. ground corn or corn meal) is used as a filler, but if corn is listed as "corn gluten" then it is a nutritious ingredient. The gluten is the little seed part at the tip of the kernel. The rest of the corn (90%) is virtually nutritionless. Also, you can't trust the protein % level in the nutrition facts listing, unless you verify in the ingedients listing that the majority of protein is coming from meat ingredients, not vegetable, as meat-based protein is more digestable than vegetable-based protein. Most of the vegetable-based protien is not absorbed digestively and simply passed back out.

Of the two, rice based would be better. However, dog food should usually be MEAT based. I wouldn't dream of feeding any dogfood unless meat was he first ingredient, and I avoid anything with corn.

I am no veterinarian, but have been told by them that the rice is easier to digest, and that it is not as fattening as the corn. I would definitely not feed the corn based to an older heavier dog who may not be as active as it was once.

Corn is a cheap filler and any dog food with corn as the first ingredient is not a nutritional food. I personally think Natures Recipe is really good.

We all know corn doesn't digest easily...can go right through you. So the question is, do you want corn growing in your yard? ; ) lol
