Lots of people are VERY frightened of the dentist. There are dentists who specialize in treating them. Some may even prescribe a little bit of a relaxing or calming drug to take before your visit. (Of course someone else would have to drive.)
Your family doctor might know of one, or might even willing to prescribe that kind of drug for the visit. You could ask the dentist to do NOTHING
but look and talk the first time. (You're the boss.)
After the first few visits, your level of fear will drop amazingly fast. Really! So do what it takes to get started, and I promise, it will get easier.

Hey, no worry just do some homework. Make things easy for yourself. I have stuff that I dread doing and so I make up excuses and procrastinate. Start by asking your neighbors, friends and family for their favorite dentists in YOUR neighborhood. hey, if it is close by, you have just eliminate one excuse of not going. Once you have found the one, have someone go with you. Make sure you tell your companion that you need to see a dentist and you can't back out anymore. Your companion takes that responsibility of you making that appointment and now the pressure is off you. Isn't it already easier? Just think, you may only need a cleaning or find a few cavities now, but if you procrastinate any long, you may need a lot more done in the future. So start asking around.

Well, you should face your fears. I was scared of the dentist once because she pulled out my teeth without telling me - and it really hurt. You should tell the dentist that you're dentist-phobic, and that you're teeth are really bad, and can he/she make the whole dentist thing a little un-scarier? Also, you can ask you're friends to accompany you. Good company always helps in difficult and scary times! Good luck and hope your teeth get better.

aha ... i just want you to know that i was dentist-phobic too, i even collapsed when entering the room, my heartbeat faster, and i felt dizzy.
but since im wearing braces, i go to dentist more often, sometimes 6 times in a month and that's make me not nervous anymore, not as scary as i imagine.
so, when my dentist took my 2 teeth i wasn't afraid.
believe me there is nothing to worry about, ask your friend or your family to accompany you in the room, and find funny dentist and also you already know that he's so smart (just like mine) so it will relief your psychological feeling because you have convinced that he knows whats the best for you.

i am also very scared of the dentist. i had an abscess tooth that needed to be pulled, so i HAD to make myself go. i took some xanax which is a nerve medicine to help make u calm. i also brought along a cd player and my fav cd so that i woldnt have to hear any of the things that he was doing. it took all of 20 mins for him to numb up my mouth and pull my tooth. didnt hurt one bit, just some pressure. my mind made made me think that it was going to be wayyyyyy worse then it actually was. the nerve pills really work well if you're scared!! plus, you have to realize that u dont have much of a choice about not going to see a dentist, especially if you are in alot of pain like i was.

Lots of people are afraid of dentists. Look for ads that say "Specialize in people afraid of dentists." Out here they have ads like that. Also find the rare dentist who does not do any drilling. They use a special machine with sound waves instead of drilling. It can handle most cavities.

Just go in a get a simple cleaning (that does not hurt one bit), then later if there are any real problems you just take some medicine before you go to numb the pain and 9 X out of 10 they give you something if it is something big, like they give you this pain medicine for a cavaty....A CAVATY!!!!!!
