My pops wouldn't let my sister or I get a car until we could show him that we could change a tire. So the first thing I think of is a jack and tire iron. Having lived in the middle of nowhere with icy roads I totally made sure I had a flash light for flagging other cars around me if I had an issue, which I did a couple of times, works great!! And it's good to have for under the hood too. First aid kit is a must!!! You never know when you'll be cruising along and all of a sudden need a turniquet for some silly artery gush. Water is mandatory - I drink about a gallon a day, so I always have water with me. And yes, it's great for cooling off an UNOPENED overheating radiator. Blanket great for cold weather, can double as a beach blanket in warmer climates. Kitty litter is mandatory!! It can help get ya unstuck and if you should spring some sort of leak, it sops it right up, preferably an environmentally friendly brand :o) Snacks that won't go bad or melt, peanuts are good to have, or if you're like me and allergic to 'em a tupperware of granola is a good substitue. A cellular battery - change, just in case cell has no serivce, usually found in between the seats or in the ashtray. Maybe a nice piece of literature - for those times when you are on the freeway and there's a forty car pile-up ahead and your gonna be stuck for awhile. That ought to do it. OH wait one more thing, I love to be barefoot, so I am always sure to have a pair of tennie-shoes in the car in case I end up having to walk or run for that matter away from the car.
Good luck and happy motoring.

Keep enough cash in your car for fuel, at least a few gallons.

Jumper cables to restart a dead battery, and make sure you know where the jack and wrench are located in case you need to change a tire. And, by the way, double check every oil change that your spare is properly inflated.

You should have a set of replacement fuses. If the fuse for your headlights go out, that's hard. But if the CD PLAYER doesn't work, that's even worse.

I wouldn't worry about a blanket or other survival equipment unless you live or are traveling through a really unpopulated area, or wilderness. In that case, a water and food supply would probably be a good idea, too.

i have a blanket, went out and got a full size spare tire, jack and lug rentch, flairs/ warning triangle (used all of those one day when we got a flat, and the side of the road was covered is prickly bushes so we put the blanket over them so we could lay down to put the jack in place), a gallon of water (if you have a radiator problem or get stranded in the middle of know where). I have an emergency road side kit that has lots of little stuff like tape, flash light, and what not. I also have some head and tail light bulbs. I know basic car maintenance as to why i have all that, everyone should know basic stuff like how to change a tire. you can take a class at your local community college. Oh i also have a change of cloths and a towel because changing a tire can be messy, gloves both work and rubber are good to have also because you don't know what fluids you might have to come in contact with. you can put all of this in a box so it dose not just float around in your trunk and is ready when you need it. good luck

My family has a complete emergency kit in both our cars, in case anything should happen. Trust me, it's come in handy more than once. Here's what we make sure is in it when we restock:

1) Blanket
2) Emergency roadside flares and triangles (at least three each)
3) Flashlight (and spare batteries)
4) Jumper cables and/or an emergency jumper battery
5) An emergency first aid kit
6) Spare fuses
7) 1 can of Fix-A-Flat emergency tire inflator
8) A tire pressure gauge
9) A portable air compressor (to inflate your tires)
10) A torque wrench, a socket that fits the lug nuts on your wheels, and the torque specifications for your lugs (to properly torque the spare tire)
11) Emergency rations
12) A cell phone

This has saved my butt in several roadside emergencies, and makes the event of a flat tire or accident much less stressful.

EDIT: I agree with a previous poster; a small or medium fire extinguisher is an excellent addition to any emergency kit.

I always keep a couple of dollars in my car for what ever emergencies that might come up. Also I keep a working flashlight, duck tape, rope and a Swiss army knife in my car. A blanket is a good Idea too. Oh and I have a small first aid kit too.

I think that you can go over board on this but it never hurts to be prepared for anything.

I keep a safety kit in my car. A real jack because if I ever have to change the tires I want a good one. I also keep a large container of water in the trunk. A couple pairs of pliers and some electrical tape. That saved me once to get home when I got a small leak in a hose in the mountains. I try not to carry much more because now days with the gas so high it does cost the more junk you have laying around in your trunk. But some things just make sense....oh and I'm never without my jumper cables.

It is a very good idea to keep things in your car for emergencies. Keep a couple of blankets, easy to eat food, water to drink and for the radiator, a flashlight w/ batteries and extra batteries, jumper cables and a first aid kits. These are the things that I can think of off the top of my head. Check out the websites below for lists.

Be Prepared and you will not fear.

it is smart to have an emergency kit in your car- like fashlights, road flares, a first aid kit, and stuff like that. It might also be a good idea to story bottled water in the trunk incase you get stranded somewhere. Always have a cell phone with you, and have a car charger. I could go on for days about whats smart to have in a car... But the truth is that peoples lives are so crazy that things like this get overlooked.

Very good question.

We keep, in our vehicles, the following:
Sleeping bag
Flashlight with extra batteries
Jumper cables (heavy duty)
Flares
Gallon jug of water
Drinking Water
First Aid Kit
911 cell phone
Emergency blanket
Tire pump
Tire guage
Container of oil
Energy bars
Extra medication (enough for two days)

To me, these are the basics (I prolly forgot a few things)

If you are going on a long trip in severe weather (hot or cold), pack additioinal suitable items for potential emergency.

Some people may think its crazy ... But more than once we have stopped and shared these items with people in trouble who didn't have them!!
