Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth, But if the salt loses it's taste, then it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing, except to be thrown out and walked on." What does this mean for waivering Christians? I have strayed far, and it's hard to find my way back on my own. What I want to know is what my fate is down here and in Heaven. Should I really care about what this means, or should I be more concerned with getting back on track?

It's not in the context of "losing ones salvation" but in the context of losing your testimony. If you, the salt of the earth, do things which affect the body and work of Christ your testimony becomes tarnished and makes you ineffectual as a Christian because those around you see "the bad stuff" and think oh well I don't need Christianity because so and so ::pointing at you:: is going to heaven and if they are going I am better than them so I know I must be going also. I hope any of that made sense lol. However that's not to say that just because you mess up does not mean your testimony cannot be restored or that you cannot create a new testimony.

It is an interesting metaphor and illustrates how the bible has some things that are not to be taken literally.
People who are the salt of the earth are the common regular people of the lower working classes. they have more compassion and more ability to understand and enjoy human friendship and loyalty. once they become rich men, they lose that regular guy quality and become snobby and indifferenet to the plight of the regular perosn below them. they can never get that feeling back again and have a diminished spiritual value. that is what it meant.
So do not worry if you have erred or sinned, you are forgiven if you repent. But if you have won and succeeded and got arrogant and forgot to give a helping hand to others and share the good fortune god has bestowed on you. you have flunked his test and are worth les than before. ( not worthless but worth less)
You still have sues, as does old salt that can be used on roads to melt ice etc. You can wash windows in heaven for the worthy souls you spat upon in life. that is Gods justice.

You are the salt of the earth until you have turned your back upon the lord and quit trying to be a better person.

it seems to contradict what i was taught in church years ago and that was that we were all sinners and all sinners fall short of the glory of god. BUT, we could ask for forgiveness and he would come and save us, making us elligible for heaven. this passage seems to say that once you screw up, you've lost your way and damn thee!!!!!
i have a problem with that......
