3 travelers stopped at a motel and asked the night clerk for a room. the clerk said the room was $30 for the night and each guest handed over $10 and went to the room for the night. the next morning when the day clerk came in, the night clerk told him of renting the room the night before. the day clerk said the room should have only been $25 and gave the night clerk 5 one dollar bills and told him to take it to room and give it back to them. on the way he realized that it would be too difficult to split $5 three ways, so he put $2 in his pocket and gave each of the guest $1 a peice. so... if the guest originally paid $10 a peice and was given $1 back, they ended up paying $9 a peice, which is $27. plus the $2 the night clerk put in his pocket is $29. what happened to the other dollar?

mathematical dilemma. there is no answer to the question. Well at least none that are known. Just like the elements we know there out there but we have to figure them out first. just like Einstein theory of fusion. its passable just not proved.

Nothing! It’s one of those strange things about the way it is added. If added sequentially it looks like this: The clerk collected $25, the travellers were each given $1 back, and the clerk kept the other $2. The total now comes to $30.

Each traveler ended up paying $9.33 each for the room if they were all given a dollar back. As opposed to paying the $8.33 that they would have if they had recieved all of $5 total discount for the room. The day clerk stole $.66 from each traveler.

This has only been posted about a dozen times.
The $30 is NOT RELEVANT
3 people paid $27 for a room that only cost $25.
The night clerk took the extra $2
There is no "missing" dollar

You have to minus the $2 the night clerk took, not add it, and that takes it to $25.

you idiot. you dont think about it that way. The 2 dollar is a borrowed money which supposed to go to the tenants. 2 + 3 dollar to each + 25 that they have to pay= 30

the $27.00 has nothing to do with the $2.00 remaining in his pocket
the equation would actually work like this:
clerk collected a total of $30.00
he returned $1.00 to each of 3 guests
for total of $3.00
$30.00 - $3.00 = $27.00 (which is equal to the amount each guest paid $9.00 x 3)
