I would start booking soon. There is definitely going to be some price gouging, so I would plan to spend what you would plan to spend in an expensive city like New York or even London. I don't know where the baseball is going to be held. I live in Tianjin, and the soccer will be held here, as well as some other events, rowing, I think. If you can find out where baseball is going to be held, you can try to book fairly close to that. Tianjin would be cheaper, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a tourist destination.

You'll definitely want to see the Great Wall while you're here. It's a can't miss. It alone is worth the trip. Also, the Summer Palace is incredible. There's also the Forbidden City. I wouldn't go more than once if I had a choice. You might want to see Tian An Men Square just to say you have. It's a big, big, big, empty square. I'd mention some shopping stops, but who knows what will have happened between now and then. So much changes so fast in China.

Those are all sites in or around Beijing. If you plan to go further afield, there's lots to see, but the choice is so broad I don't know where to begin.

It is good that you think of planning your trip long before you get on the plane!

Check the schedules (for baseball, it starts from 13th to 22nd August, 22nd would be the final match) of the games and maps of the stadiums then book the hotel near by to save the traffic time. Beijing would be very crowded during Olympics because not just tourists from outside world but also people from different parts of China would rush to Beijing. We can predict that the hotel room rates would be very expensive that even a 3 stars hotel would take the chance to rip u off!

The official website of Beijing 2008 Olympics is

en.beijing2008.com

Actually, there are some olympics events would be held in Shanghai and Equestrian events would be held in Hong Kong.

Travelling Cost estimation per person per day (for 2006 summer)

round air-ticket US$600+ (Y class departure from San Francisco)
hotel US$ 70+ (US$140 for a double room per night)
Food & Drinks US$ 30+ (per day)
Transportation US$ 10+ (per day) x 4 would be enough for Taxi
fee around the city area
Other expenses US$50 (per day)

I would suggest you to sum up the above figures by how many days you would stay in Beijing then add 25% of the total on top as your budget (at least a rough idea of how much you would spend) then check the travel agencies which provide tour services for olymipics 2008.

Wish you good luck!

Bring your credit cards and some traveler's checks. You may need to spend a lot during the Olympics, especially on tickets and accommodation. Hotel rooms are expected to be very expensive.

Just to give you an indication of the cost of accommodation: 5-star hotels are selling standard rooms from USD100-300 per night today. Lower rated hotels are selling at from USD30-100.

Don;t worry about food. There are all kinds of international cuisines available in this city.

Historical sites are plentiful in Beijing. Make sure you have at least 7 days for sight seeing. Just to name a few:

1. Forbidden City - spend 1 day there.
2. Tian-an-men square (outside of Forbidden City) + Temple of Heaven - spend 1 day
3. Summer Palace - 1 day
4. Ming Tomb + Great wall - 1 day
5. Beijing Muzeum - 1 day (very big. You may not be able to finish it)
etc

Try not to travel with the local tour as you may not be able to see as much as you wish. Plan your routes and time carefully.

Good luck!

Plan ahead. I went to LA and Athens olympics. Get you place early. I found a good site at www.itsaboutchina.com. I had a great tour guide in Beijing (Nancy) and a great travel company to arrange most of my travel (karen). you can contact them if you have any questions. It is great but I think they are talking about ending baseball as an event soon.

Try finding 2 seperate rooms in a middle class hotel.one room for your parents and one for you and your guy! Also book the hotel early like 6 months early to assure it wont be given away which is what happens alot of the time!
