I have read that chocolate is toxic to cats. you might want to call a vet and see what they say. When I was a kid I fed small amts of chocolate to a pet cat without knowing it was bad & he was fine. Keep an eye on him, it might be all right if he didn't eat much.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is similar to caffeine. Cats are very sensitive to theobromine and can experience serious heart symptoms from even small doses. Fortunately, most chocolate flavored foods contain very little theobromine. Even milk chocolate doesn't have much, and white chocolate has none. Dark chocolate and baker's chocolate have higher concentrations, enough to be dangerous to cats.
The good news is that anything with significant amounts of theobromine is probably bitter enough that the cat won't eat it in the first place. If your cat ate a bit of chocolate it was probably milk chocolate which is not dangerous in small amounts. If it were going to get sick you'd know by now.

If the chocolate was very small, it should not matter, hopefully. But I know that dogs could get ill from chocolate, so cats could too, probably. I wouldn't worry about it. My friend's dog ate a whole chocolate bunny, and he is still his old corky cute self. Don't let the situation make you worry. I think that your cat will be perfectly safe.
But if you are still scared, then go to a vet. They may have some advice.

When chocolate (especially dark chocolate) is eaten "straight" like pieces of baking chocolate it can be toxic to cats and dogs. Cats usually will not eat enough of it to do great harm, dogs however will eat it in great quantities and it can cause death for them by overstimulating the heart into fatal fibrillation. So a few licks from the bottom of the bowl of choclate ice cream won't affect the cat much at all. Better if it is vanilla, peach and not chocolate chip.

No, that small piece of chocolate it not going to make your cat die, its long term ex-poser to chocolate that may make your cat sick, now on the other hand chocolate, onions, and mushrooms are poison to dogs again long term which is fatal so what you wouldn't feed to a dog probably its not good for cats either. Hope I help some.

While it is true that chocolate is toxic for pets, it is also true that a small piece will not kill your cat, nor make him very ill. A small piece found by accident will not hurt your cat anymore than a large bowl filled with M&M's hurt my parents dog (her name was cake eater). She did get very ill, but she did not die from this, but I wouldn't recommend that either eat chocolate on a regular basis.

Small amounts will not kill a cat or a dog and the type of chocolate is the biggest issue milk chocolate is very diluted, but bakers chocolate is very poison to cats and dogs. Just keep an eye on the cat and make sure it keeps acting fine.

A small amount shouldn't hurt them. One of my dogs loved chocolate and the other wouldn't touch it. The cats wouldn't touch it either. Just reading some of these answers allowed me to know that a cat would eat it. I basically think of cats as being smarter than dogs.
PS. I just went out and gave some chocolate to the current cats and dog. They were all dumb, dumb dumb, dumb. I ate the rest. It isn't good for mankind either. Ugh didn't care for it. I didn't buy it, my sister did.

Both cats and dogs cannot be given chocolate as it contains a compound that is toxic for them. I cannot remember the name of the compound.
Also interesting to note is that chocolate is banned from being given to race horses as it acts as a stimulant and can potentially make them run faster!
Anyway, the small amount that your kitty ate will probably not do him much harm, but just note for future reference that they shouldnt eat it even if they beg you for it!
