Why do they need to prove to the community that their wife was a virgin? How embarrasing is it for the woman that everyone knows she got popped the night before!

Do they really do that? In the Old Testament, that practice was required, and if the girl could not prove her virginity, she was put to death. It has to do with the breaking of the hymen, but many girls don't even have one--but I guess BibleGod was not aware of that when he made up those rules.

Firstly, i'd like to point out that there has to be a clear distinction of what Islam teaches, and what people do with their customs that are not part of the religion.
this is a prime example of something that should not be associated with Islam. because no where in any religious book, whether it be the Quran, the books of Hadith, or the books from the Scholars, do they say anything about this.
it is true however, that unfortunately in some places in the arab world, and in india, and other coutries around the world, that they do do this.
but this is not something which Islam promotes in any way, shape or form.

The display of the sheet is equivalent to holding of a certificate of virginity for the poor woman in a male dominated society. In other societies the same thing is done in other ways. In my personal opinion, it is degradation of a wonderful creature we call woman.

It's completely false. I suggest you to get your facts straight.
This thing doesn't happen in Arabia, nor even anywhere. Even if it happens, it's totally out of ignorance & prejudice. It's not a part of Islam. This kind of practice is nowhere mentioned in Qur'an or Sunnah.
