You are thinking of Hanuman.

Hanuman is a symbol of Hinduism. A symbol of an aspect of God. In the Ramayana the story goes that Rama is denied his rightful place as king of the kingdom. Then Ravana steals Sita, his wife, away and takes her to Lanka. Hanuman helps Rama rescue Sita and destroy Ravana. The symbolism of the story is that Rama represents humanity. Sita represents our true nature and Hanuman represents devotion and Ravana represents our ego. Thus: The message is that through devotion to God, the ego can be destroyed and humanity can realize its true nature. (that's really an oversimplification).

In Hinduism every Hindu is allowed to, if they wish, pick amongst a variety of symbols and names that they can use as part of their worship. Some choose the form of Hanuman and address God by that name. The form is used as a meditation tool, to help focus the mind. The name too is a meditation tool. By sitting in meditation and repeating a mantra with that name in it or just that name, this is one form of meditation. The form is also used on the altar as a representation of the divine that dwells within us and throughout the entire universe (God). It, again, is just a focal point for the mind. However, there are some sects of Hinduism that do not use forms or names.

i'll try to give you the right perspective by asking you a question from the wrong perpective:

why do christians love the idea of that tortured crucified man on the cross? what kind of sadistic animals are they?

that's how your question came across.
