The best way is by visiting the projects they have worked on, and interviewing their past clients.
Do you need an interior decorator or interior designer? An interior designer knows the techie stuff engineers and architects know about construction, such as ventilation, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, fire protection and structural considerations. They have an organization, American Society of Interior Designers(ASID). You can ask for referrals from their website.
If your project will simply entail some color matching and furniture selection, you can save much by just hiring a decorator. Check the phone book.

Ask your friends, neighor or co-workers, someone maybe able to recommend someone to you. Some people are hard to work with so you must feel comfortable with the interior decorator and their ideas before they start your job.

DO IT YOURSELF.....DO A RESEARCH OF MATERIAL LIKE IN MAGAZINE OR BOOKS ON HOW YOU WANT YOUR HOUSE LOOK LIKE.....FOR EXAMPLE TRY TO DO A SKETCH OF ANY PART OF THE HOUSE THAT YOU WANT TO DECORATE.....THAN.....CHOOSE.....ITEMS THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO YOU TO PUT IN THERE....LIKE CANDLES, BOOKS, A CREDENZA, SOME LAMPS, A MIRROR OR A PICTURE FRAME....AND SO ON......YOU WILL BE AMAZE HOW EASY IS FOR YOU TO DECOR YOUR OWN PRIVATE AND UNIQUE STYLE......THIS IS A SUGGESTION FROM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER.....CAUSE WE USUALLY CHARGE A LOT IN THIS.....SO I THINK THAT TO SAVE MONEY THIS IS THE BEST WAY.....EVEN THOUGH IS GOING TO TAKE TIME AND MONEY TO DO RESEARCH.....
