I am a Hindu, and quite educated about Hindu theology and philosophy as well - and can tell you with absolute certainty, that NO Hindu believes that the ‘the cow is there (their !) mother’.
To us, a cow is to be treated and fed well, like a mother - because its gives us milk, just as one's own mother does !
...If YOU really believe what you claim, let us leave it to the other Answerers here, to decide whose belief is more humane !

We don't believe that the cow is our mother. However, the cow is a symbol and is sometimes associated as a symbol of motherhood in Hinduism.

The cow is mainly a symbol that represents selfless service. The cow produces milk which we can drink for nourishment. The milk can also be turned into cheese which we can eat. The milk can also be used to make butter which can also be eaten. Butter is also used for cooking (it is basically the grease that food is prepared in) in India. In ancient India the butter was also melted and cotton wicks placed in it and thus this made oil lamps which made it possible to light their homes. In ancient India the cow was also used to pull carts and farm equipment. Thus, the cow did all of these things for humanity and did so selflessly. It never asked anything of us other than shelter and food, and yet it was and is able to take care of us by producing so much. So, the cow came to symbolize selfess service and that it is still what it represents today.

Hindu treat a cow as mother, coz a cow ,is lovable ,very peaceful by nature, not harmful to anyone, ability to protect and nourishment to her calf as human do. in India mostly in villages people used to keep a cow for our daily consumption of milk and milk made products. so both r very close and used to each other in daily life, people share her milk as well her calf. Hindu feel for her the value and quality of mother's nature.

Don't take it literally. Hindu belief in cow as mother means they treat the cow motherly. As any mother feeds her milk to her children, cow's milk is used when mother stops feeding her milk to her child. So the relationship of cow and the child is motherly.

Hinduism is not a religion. It is a culture much older than any other civilisations in the world today.

Through generations many false practises entered into this culture. Many started practising it as a religion. What you mentioned is one of those.
