Has anyone actually had a problem swimming right after eating? Or even know someone who has? Or is this one of those old wives' tales? If anyone can answer from medical training, I'd appreciate it.

No basis for this one other than after you eat, your body typically shunts blood to the digestive tract and away from the brain and skeletal muscle. With physical activity this shunting would be over ridden, POSSIBLY, MAYBE precipitating a cramp. I have never heard of it actually playing a role in any water accident.

It can be. They say to wait 20 minutes after a meal. The reason why is that you can get a stomach cramp if you go swimming too soon, especially if the water is really cold or you are doing very vigorous swimming. Now if you just had a small slice of cheese it probably wouldn't make much difference. A three course meal with a steak, well...

Your more prone to cramping right after eating due to the fact that after a meal, the majority of your blood id directed internally to the digestive organs so they can function efficiently. When you swim or perform any other task involving stress and the need for increased blood flow to the skeletal muscles, the skeletal muscles lose the battle for blood flow and tire rapidly. It just happens that tired cramping muscles during a swim is about the most dangerous place that can occur.

yes its very bad - the reason is that the stomach is full and the swimming ro any other exercise then compresses the stomach and puts pressure on the pancreas gland which then pumps whatever the fluid it it produces into the stomach

i have done this twice (slow learner !) and each time had major stomach ache afterwards for 2 or 3 days and puked up green fluid

i guess if you took it too far it could kill you
