I have a dog "part lab" that decided to give birth to her pups in the woods. We live in a wooded country area and she loves being outdoors. She has a nice dog house which is being enough for her and her pups but she decided on having them deep in the woods under a bunch of trees that have either been cut down or have fallen down.

I was checking her temperature pretty regularly for the past week because I was told that if her temperature dropped to under 100 degrees then she'd have her pups within 24 hours. I planned to bring her inside "in my basement," when her temperature dropped. I checked it yesterday morning around 5am and it was 100.2 and she was eating fine. So, I let her back outside but by noon she had already went to this wooded den and had her pups.

I have tried to look up in there to see her and her pups but she is too far back. I can hear them whine but that is about it. I am worried about her/pups. What can I do? I can't get to them.

This is her second litter and she is a good mother. I worry because people have been telling me that her/pups could get sick, get a disease, etc. I also worry about snakes and spiders getting to them. The entrance to this den has spider webs all over it.. not too mention I spotted a black widow "inside the den," towards the ground.

Don't worry yourself too much, dogs have a natural instinct about them when it comes to their babies....If she thinks it's unsafe, she'll move them to a safer location. There is absolutely NO way of getting to them??? If not, just make sure she stays with them or returns frequently to feed and check on them. There's gotta be some way of getting the puppies out....?

Don't do anything. Your dog knows what she is doing and she is the best thing for those pups right now. Calm down, when she is ready she will let you see them or she will bring them to you. Have patience and do not bother her when she is with the pups. she might think you want to bother them and she will protect them. She knows a lot more about what to do than you do so just sit tight and start thinking up puppy names

She sounds like a very good mother and it sounds like she's picked a pretty safe place for them. I'd say make sure she is fed well and has fresh water. When they're able to come out on their own in a few weeks, make sure you spend time with them so they'll be used to people. Poor thing, you must be worried sick!

Are you also worried about all the foxes and wolves and coyotes who have pups outside? Guess what, the dog will know what to do. It's an animal, it has animal instincts.
