In US, auto insurance is required if you own a car.
Everything else, is just extra protection. If you are not wealthy, then you need different kind of protections
Such as:
Health insurance (cost of being in hospital or seeing a doctor is very expensive)
Home insurance (if you own a home).
Life insurance (if you really want to care for your family's finance after you pass away)

By law (in most places), if you want to drive on the roads, you must have auto insurance with certain minimum coverages. Still 1 out of 3 drivers do not have it. (I don't offer auto insurance).

There are some occupations and business that must have liability insurance.

On a personal level it is very wise to have many different coverages - health, life and disability.

Insurance is there to pay the BIG bills that come in when something drastic happens. Insurance keeps you from spending your savings to repair or replace things that get damaged.

Talk to people with cancer or MS. Talk to car accident victims. Talk to anyone from New Orleans.

Then talk to a licensed insurance agent.

You should really try to have all the coverage that you can get:
Car ( a must)
Health (a must)
Home ( a must)
Life (if you have dependents, a must)
DI (If you appreciate your pay check every 2 weeks, a must)

Bottom line, all insurances are important, one is not any more important than the other. However, you should consider what you have at risk and deptermine what its worth to you and then determine if you are willing to protect it.

In Texas everyone that drives must have minimum liability insurance. If you don't, and you get stopped (for any reason), you get a ticket and they impound your car until you get it. Also you cannot get your vehicle registration or inspection without it. If you have insurance and it is cancelled, they will report you to the Department of Public Safety, and they will revoke your registration.
