that would vary from school to school, here's why. your school looks at your processed fafsa which gives them an efc, which is the expected family contribution. that figure is derived from your fafsa information, ie your age, income, assets, number in household, marital status etc.
they compare your efc to their cost of attendance which is and estimated budget for a student to attend and is composed of fixed costs like your tuition and estimated costs like room and board and travel etc.
so, let's make up an example. your efc is 1000, your school's cost is 25,000. this means that 25000-1000=24,000 which is your need for financial aid. you can talk to the financial aid office at your school and see if it would be possible to raise your cost of attendance. that way, if they raised it to, for example, 27,000. that would mean it would now be 27,000-1000=26,000 and your need would be greater. see if your school can adjust your costs for travel and child care, if the amount you pay is higher than the one they estimate for their students. good luck.
ps i do this for a living, i know what im talking about. ;)

You have so many financial aid options, depending on where you plan to go, what you want to do, and what is your annual income! It does not matter whether you are fresh out of high school or not... There are many sources like...

1. FAFSA
- this is the first financial aid application you should submit... Every american student files this to receive aid. With this application you can receive Pell Grants, Work Study, and this also qualifies you to Stafford loans (the best, lowest loan interests out there!).

2. State Grants / Scholarships
- depending on which state you live in, each state usually has grants or scholarships for its residents. Like here in California, we have Cal Grants that pays for our college up to $ 17,000 or more per year... depeding on your grades or economic status.

3. Go to Fastweb.com and find out more about scholarships available for you.

Your best choice is to talk to your chosen school's financial aid advisor so he or she can tell you all the aid available for you. Don't forget to bring your (and your spouse's, if applicable) Income Tax documents!

It's great to hear you are going to college! Good luck!

Hey! I've been grabbing these questions as I see them:) Whatever you do, go for the grants and scholarships first. There are plenty of them; you shouldn't need to take out a student loan. You're exactly right, keep the student loans as LOW as possible. Go to the financial aid office at your school and they can help you with any questions you have. First, fill out a fafsa application online first. Then, they can help you from the office from there.

No, you don't get extra money for childcare and travel. Financial aide has a set amount that you can get, it is based on your income...not on your bills. You can do searches online for scholarships...or check with your school about non-traditional single parents.

You need to go on line and fill out a FAFSA - this will tell you how much and what type of loans you qualify for. and also send this info to your chosen colleges. When I went back to school, my loans were in increments of $500. Sometimes I had extra money which I used for books, software, etc.
Do a search on FAFSA - and then you will know more.

Your financial aid package will very from school to school. But financial aid is based off of your FAFSA. Your income will determine what types of grants and loans you are elligible for. Usually, schools only give money for child care if you are a single mother.

Check at the college of your choice for grants. Some states give grants, and you can try for federal also.
