I wouldn't use chlorine straight on someone's head! There is a new electronic comb that zaps the little critters as you comb them out! Get it at drug stores. You don't have to use any chemicals on your head. OR if you still want to use a household product, use crisco or other shortening(white solid that you fry food in ). Put a bunch on your head and rub it in very well, saturate it. Then cover your head tightly with saran wrap for about an hour. Try not to go out into the heat because it melts fast enough with you body temperature. Keep a towel over your shoulders. The lice will crawl through the crisco trying to find AIR but get a double whammy because of the plastic wrap and then they are suffocated! Repeat every 2 or 3 days to kill the new ones hatching at different times! While you are waiting the hour start gathering every material item (sheets, cases, spreads, coats, clothes not in drawers or closet, couch pillows, etc)in your house because it must be washed! I use the brown Lysol to wash them with. Vaccum you bed, wash the pillows in hot water, gather stuffed animals, etc that can't be washed and put them in an airtight bag for 72 hrs. After you finish your head, use one of the lice bombs that come in cans and leave the house for a couple of hrs.Make sure to remove pets, goldfish(I killed mine),cover all food, etc. When you return home begin cleaning: vaccum carpets and upholstered furniture, mop floors, clean counter tops well, etc. Don't forget that if you have it, your family will probably have it or get it! Crisco them!!!

No chlorine will not kill lice. They actually like it. They prefer clean hair to dirty hair. Strange huh? If the shampoos at the store do nothing for lice then see a doctor. They can prescribe a shampoo that will help. Also the house needs to be treated. anything that can be put into the dryer needs to be in there for about one hour on high heat. Anything that is to big needs to be bagged for 2 weeks with no air. Then vacuum everything. The beds and couches, fabric is the worst about keeping lice. Coincidentally, the worst place to catch head lice is at the movie theater. Also, everyone in the house needs to have at least one treatment. Animals excluded.

I don't think chlorine kills them. When my daughter was younger I believe a couple of times she may have picked them up from the pool. and they also JUMP! I watched one when we had to comb through her hair. I've heard many ideas for taking care of them by other than the lice shampoo treatments. One of the things I did hear and seemed to work for us was to use Mint shampoo (we purchased it at Sally's Beauty Supply, I believe it was Helene brand). The lice apparently don't like the mint. The lice shampoo that kills the nits works best. I've heard that kerosene will work (but the smell......!!!!!). I've also heard that flea shampoo works (the names of the chemicals are similar to that in the lice shampoo). It is important to get rid of the nits in the hair. Nits are eggs. Eggs will hatch if not gotten rid of or killed. If the nit comes off the hair easily, it's dead. If not easily, it can hatch. That's why they recommend washing all clothing & linens, bagging up the stuffed animals for 2 weeks, and vacuuming. Check for nits frequently. The combs that are best are a bit expensive but work So Great! It has a magnifier on it, very very fine teeth, and tweezers to help grab the bugs that are combed out. I believe it's somewhere between $8-$10.

I'm not a dr. and I don't know if the bugs could live thru chlorine, but I KNOW the eggs can, so swimming alone wouldn't kill them. Go to a drug store and get Nix. Comes in a box with instructions on how to use the product as well as on how to and what to clean to fully get rid of lice( you have to wash bedding, combs and brushes, stuffed toys etc.)

I truely don't know about the mayo tips. Maybe the mayo makes the hair to slick for them to lay eggs...I don't know. The vinegar tip is true. The acidity kills them, but you still need to go thru the hair with a tiny tooth comb to get the nits(eggs) out. I'm not buying the tip about alcohol either. There are a lot of misconceptions about lice and most a represented here.

Oh- and lice prefer CLEAN HAIR. It has nothing to do with not washing your hair enough or being dirty-it just means those type of people don't take the necessary steps to get rid of lice if they did get them.

I've been dealing with lice for a while now (every time my daughter gets rid of it, someone gives it back). It's VERY frustrating. Use a vinegar & mineral oil solution. Leave on the the hair for 20 min & use a lice comb to go through it. The vinegar kills any live eggs & nits. The mineral oil softens the hair and loosens the eggs. I have heard that they don't like chemicals because they have a hard time sticking to them (hairspray, gel, mousse, dye, etc.) Try it.

Stay away from Nix, lice are becoming immune to it. Plus when you use over the counter stuff, you can only use it once a week. The vinegar/ mineral solution can be used everyday.

TO: JUST ME--- FYI, LICE PREFER CLEAN HAIR!!! THEY CAN'T STICK TO DIRTY HAIR. NOW WHO SHOULD TAKE A SHOWER? GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT B4 YOU SHOOT YOUR MOUTH OFF

Most lice shampoos work. If you get them eggs and all!!!! It helps if someone else is doing it.
The biggest miss conception is that there only in your head. Actually, the can spread to anything you touch or are near. Like Bedding, Stuffed animals and clothes. To actually get rid of them give everything a really good washing with bleach or a product with some form of bleach. The best way for stuffed animals is lysol them and everything else you've touched then bag the animals up in a trash bag tightly with no holes. And let the bag sit for a while. Like a few weeks or even a month. If they are washable, trying washing them. That also includes dolls of all kinds!

Hope it helps!!!!!

I don't think so....if you have lice the only treatment is using a fine comb to remove the nits (eggs) from the roots of your hair, and then using a special medicated shampoo that will kill the lice and any remaining eggs. You also have to make sure to wash your bedding, pillow, etc (many people forget this step), and replace combs/brushes/etc. Also, lice isn't caused by unsanitary conditions.

Chlorine is poison to lice and to humans. Use a lice treatment. Try Wal Mart Drugs section.

mayo will help you and you have to wash everything, vacuum everywhere, and put all stuffed animals in a plastic bag for a month... leave the mayo on over night with a shower cap...lice like clean hair not dirty! so after the treatment...pile up some hair grease on your hair while you clean everything so you wont just get it right back! kerosene works too but not recommended! my granny did that to me and the Doctor tells pregnant woman to use mayo you have to be sure to use a nit comb for the eggs and get them all out! treat again in 7 days and wash everything again! you have to get the lice spray for beds and stuff tho! that's the cheapest way...but if you can just get rid or kniks the regular lice shampoo

No, chlorine will do nothing against head lice except make them even more angry at you. If your that worrysome about it, use mayonase and vegtable oil on the hair. It will take a couple of times but it does get them out...safe to use on younger than 3 children who wont sit still too.
