Most of that stuff is more American Summer Vacation than American City. Go down to the Cape or the South or North Shores. You'll also find clam shacks there. Diners (with JUKE boxes and malteds) are unauthentic repro chain casual dining places, but you can still find real diners around with good cheap food. Boston, on the other hand, is one of the places America began. Our American experiences can be found at Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market, very old eateries in the Blackstone Block (the Union Oyster House, the Bell in Hand, and the Green Dragon) where Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty argued freedom from the Brits. Or Durgin Park. Or the North End, where Italian immigrants settled. The Boston Common, where cattle once grazed. The Freedom Trail. Chinatown. Beacon Hill. Back Bay. History you can walk on, see, and touch. Diners -- Busy Bee at St. Mary's, Brookline. No juke box, no shakes, no floats, just good food and ripped vinyl booths. Mike's City Diner in the South End. South Street Diner, at Kneeland and South Street. Silvertone Bar and Grill on Bromfield. In Boston itself, we can do bowling and billiards rather than miniature golf. Kings in the Back Bay, or Boston Billiards. And, of course, The Boston RED SOX. Get tickets to a weekday afternoon game. That's about as American as you can get.
