I believe you are looking for "Corduroy" by Don Freeman. The bear has one green overalls and is on the shelf in a store and thinks no one has bought him because he has lost is button. So he goes hunting for it at night and goes upstairs to the furniture dept and sees buttons on mattresses when the nightwatchman finds him and puts him back on the shelf. The next day a girl brought him home and sewed a button on his overalls for him. Her name was Lisa and I remember it because that is my name.
Good book about friendship. Good luck!

The bear that is searching for his missing button is indeed Corduroy. However, you make reference to Good Night Mr. Moon. There is a book titled "Goodnight Moon" with a brown bear as the central character. These were two of my favorite children's stories while growing up.
Both are great stories!

It is Corduroy who lives in a toy store that loses his button. A girl bought Corduroy and sewed the button on him.
