1. Do NOT get fitted. As important as it is to get fitted, for a beginner on a budget, it is totally unnecessary. Even after a full year of lessons, my pro tells me that fitting, at this point, would be premature. The reason is that you have not fully developed your swing yet. Proper fitting takes into account your swing speed, tempo, and other factors that will change as you develop your golf swing.

2. The Adams Idea OS set for men is probably the best product on the market for someone in your position. The set includes wood-like hybrids for the 3 and 4 irons, iron-like hybrids for the 5 and 6 irons, and regular cavity backs for your 7-PW irons. This set is slightly above your price range at $419, but can be found on eBay for $369. That is a really great price for a quality set of irons.

I think most answers are going to tell you to get fitted for clubs that match your size among other things. There are online spots that will give you a ballpark idea of what you need to look for. Other than that, keep an eye for specials at stores such as Sports Authority. Often they have clubs marked down to your price range. But it is no use if you find a set that does not meet your physical size etc. I would consider looking at used clubs from a local shop as well. Clubs will help your game but they won't make you a good golfer. I am using a set from a pawn shop, got them cheap and luckily they were a match to my size.
Now I am ready to invest a something slightly better.

Well, as a new golfer I would suggest trying to find a used set of clubs that is in decent condition instead of spending money on a brand new set. You will have a lot to learn about the game and your swing and you never know you might not like it, but I think you will. Just start with something simple and then work your way up to a brand new set.

I would highly reccomend the Adams Idea set. Go to ***** Sporting Goods, or Sports Authority, and check em out. They replace the 3 and 4 irons with hybrids. It's a really great set.

You'll be alot closer to 300, if you want hybrids. Callaway makes great clubs right here in America. They cost a little more, but are definately worth it. I'd just stick to the basic irons and woods.

I suggest you go to several golf company web sites. See when they have a demo day in your area. Hit as many clubs as you can and have them fit you. Once you know what you want, you can start looking at the used clubs that work the best for you. I have links to a lot of the companies on my blog roll and a lot of other golf links for beginners. Here is a good place to find out if your getting a good deal on the clubs you buy.

i would definately tell you to first get a set of used clubs like at a pawn shop/garage sales. Pratice first and see if you really like it. Golf is definately an expensive sport, so you should only invest money if you really like it. Some of my friends have spent $600 on clubs, and now have really gotten out of the sport Just wouldn't want you to waist money! Have fun!!!

Nice typo...blubs!

Actually, the way I play, a more appropriate typo would be FLUBS!

Seriously, a good way to save on a starter set would be with used (preflubbed) clubs. Try Craig's list or E-bay or your local club pro shop.

And take a lesson, if you want to avoid flubs with your clubs!

I started playing golf this year and am already hitting as far as the experienced kids on our team. I got the Callaway GES set. They are for women who are just learning to play. I ordered them online by typing in Callaway GES in a search engine and comparing prices from there. Mine cost me $250.
