My 13-year old daughter is getting braces. She surprisingly isn’t scared for the braces part. She’s nervous about the prep. The visit before you get braces. Photographs with “lip-stretchers?”, x-rays [she’s a gagger] and her worst fear: Molds/Impressions. All her friends say they have gagged, and they’re fine with even getting x-rays at the dentist, which is hard for my daughter.
What is everything like, and any techniques for gaggers?

She appreciates it, thanks :-]

The prep of getting braces is not bad @ all. When u first go in they take pictures of your teeth. Then they put your head in this thing that takes x-rays of your teeth it's not bad @ all.The best part actually is the impressins.First they ask you what flavor u want I chose bubble gum. Then they mix this stuff up and stick in to the top and bottom of your mouth. The only part that u may feel discomfort is when they pull the impression out your mouth. It's like a suction cup.It just feels like something sticky was stuck to the top of your mouth and it's hard to get off that's all. Then the jaw pulling part of course it feels like they are trying to rip your jaw out it's nothing to scream or be scared about. Then the last thing they do is stick this hot mirror in your mourh to take more pictures. Then they load the pictures and print them so you can see how yoor teeth look, but you'll be fine. And that's all 2 it.Hope I was able 2 help.

I had braces for three years. I don't remember my prep being very bad; they took some x-rays which you only need to hold still for, and the teeth impressions didn't personally make me gag. And I am a HUGE gagger. It was like biting into something, kind of like those fluoride treatments you get at the dentist. My orthodonist was very understanding; whenever a procedure got too uncomfortable, he would tell me to raise my hand and they would stop so I could take a breather. This only happened once, I believe. Your daughter should do just fine if she relaxes and uses some positive self-talk on the way in. Maybe she can express her concerns to the orthodontist? I'm sure he/she will do their best to make everything comfortable.

I didn't gag. The best thing to do is relax. The stretchers can be some painful, but I guess it depends on the patience of the ortho. If he's slow with his work, then she shouldn't feel any pain. Mine was a quick worker. Not that he did a worse job, he just did it faster, so it was more painful because of fast movements of jerking my face around. The bottom mold of your mouth is uncomfortable, but not painful. I'd be more scared about the first week of the braces. You can't chew your teeth hurt so badly. Get her soft foods for the first couple days. Trust me. And lots of painkillers.
