My boyfriend joined the national guard and he didn't really explain much to me before he left. My main question is what happens after AIT? Is he considered active duty right away or reserve and how does that work? What are his chances of going to Iraq? Thanks for any type of help!

Crap! I love these answers.

He is National Guard. After AIT, he will return home. He will be required to do his one weekend a month, and his two weeks a year (normally in the summer).

IF his unit is activated, then he will be required to do the mission. If the unit is activated to go to Iraq or Afganistan, then that is where he will go. If his unit is activated to perform a mission for the state, then that is what he will do.

In any case, he will return home after AIT. You need to find out from him THEN if his unit is to be activated.

Well I just retired from the Army of 20 years and what will happen after he gets out of the boot camp/ basic & ait he will be given a 14 day leave maybe and then go to Iraq with the other poor souls. oh he will be active duty when he completes basic training and ait...there is no sense going with him if he is going to be gone like for 3 years at a time unless you marry him. There are a lot of divorces when the guys go to the field or like iraq because the wives feel they need to find someone to be with and cannot wait for their guy to return from duty. Think hard before going with a military soldier its a rough haul.

If he is in the National Guard and his unit is not in rotation to Iraq, he will return home after AIT and attend "drills" one weekend every month and two weeks in the summer. The governor can call up his unit to deal with disasters within the state, and the Pentagon can send the unit to Iraq or Afghanistan.

usually after ait they go active duty and get deployed. His chances are pretty high right now of getting deployed, but have hope. I'm an army wife...and my husband has been in iraq for 8 months now. Every aspect of a military life is hard, but believe me, if you love him enough, wait for him. It's worth it. Good luck!

when he graduates from AIT he will come home and start doing monthly ''drills" if his unit gets called up (hurricane relief, or War on terror) then he will go.
