Your question doesn't give enough detail to allow anyone to really help you. What are you searching for? To learn the possible country of origin? To locate a particular family?
And how are you "hitting bottom"? There are many ways such a search can go wrong - my favorite is the Beer family of New York. There is absolutely no way to make that one work. Beer... New York... saloons, bars, hotels, breweries, etc., etc., and no way to filter them out.
An effective surname search requires work. First, just search for the name. Look at the results; if you have too many irrelevant ones, are there terms common to many of them that you could exclude from your next search? Try that. And try looking at ANY result that includes the surname. Enough of those results will at least tell you things like what part of the country people with that name tend to live in; for a really unusual surname, you might even find most of them are in the same profession.
If you want genealogical results, search for the name AND genealogy OR "family history" OR cemetery (and so on...) If you want a particular family, search for an unusual first name you know occurred in that family, or the name of the city and town they lived in.
Those are some general tips; I really can't help you more without knowing what sort of trouble you are having, and what it is you hope to learn.
