Paul Moody once said, "Everybody wants to be a ***** and nobody wants to be a *****." (I changed it up a little so that it is more politically correct. One ends in "igga" and the other ends in "igger" you get the idea) What I take that to mean is that being black is fashionable. Hip-Hop culture and Rap music has made it cool to be black, however there is a negative stigma associated with being black to which no one wants to be connected.

There are many ethnicities that are closely connected to Africa that deny their roots as well such as Spain, Greece and Italy. They don't claim their bloodlines either. Why? Because black people will never assimilate into mainstream society. There was a time when Italians, Irish, Jewish and Germans were separate ethnicities. Not any more. While they may not consider themselves to be white, there is no separate column on an application for them to check when question about race arise. They are all considered White.

Latinos have learned that if they disassociate with black culture, they too will assimilate.

because of this system we have today makes people think that having african bloodlines is bad that being black isnt a good thing im mixed with whole bunch of different things but when im asked what i am i say im black i dont see anything wrong with being black but they have told that being black is bad because they call us lazy we dont know how to read and we like to steal thats how caucasian people perceive us to be when it isnt true not everyone is a thief but that doesnt change the fact of how people perceive us to be they have been told that black isnt a good thing to be because we have it harder in schools on work so they rather deny their african bloodlines than be subjected to that kind of racism

maybe becasue racism exists everywhere. There are poeple of african heritage everywhere in the world. Mostly, the african heritage has been stomped out (especially if what brought them there was slavery- however this isn't the reason everywhere in the world). Also, possibly becasue they are not as hung up about their african roots as some of the black folks in the US. Differnt experince/history. They are first and formost mexicans/ or indios...their identiy is about their nation of origin, not so much race.

I think it has to do with the superiority complex...An example...the continent of Africa is generally associated to blacks, thus making N. Africans (arabs) want to identify themselves as europeans...& of recent times the Southern African countries (Angola, S. Africa, Mozambique, etc: all with alot of white skin indigens)

Latinos as i understand, are generally split between white, black & Amerindians.....the most predominant being the Ameridians & Negroids (but this is in function w/ what region you are looking at) In this case i'm talking Mexico...mostly: métis, which is a blend of European & some other ancestry (usually refered to as non-european) The former in most cases involves african ancestry...

I personally believe the dejection is owing to the dominant Amerindian trace but again i doubt that it be good enough reason for one to deny their roots...Bon my view...

Thanks alot ms_Diva_D: i earlier feared writing that, i presumed it will be considered "incorrect" but you're right...People tend to deny being of African descent because the race is generally associated to "evil" Why i've never understood...

You do know that only around 1% of Hispanics have African in them. Plus I don't see African in the majority of Mexicans I seen so your question is kinda stupid. Why is everyone trying to tell everyone who ain't black that they have black in them it's really annoying.

Yeah, my kids' father is supposedly of Venezuelan descent.. well. come to find out, just a few years back, his grandmother was actually from S.Africa... and was adopted by a couple in Venezuela! I haven't asked my ex about this but am sure he's seething! I used to joke about his full lips, his bubble-butt, and curly, heavy hair and he never did think it was funny.. The kids think it's okay that they're 1/4 black.. so, who cares besides their dad?

If you did a little research into man's origins, you will find that the entire human race has got an African blood line. Jules, lecturer. Australia.

you can't tell bloodlines simply by looking at people and some latinos really do not have african heritage....some of the native populations in central and south america have thicker hair and darker features than native populations here in the states, which can lead to the assumption of african heritage. also they have some asian blood in the mix too. most of the latinos i know don't deny african heritage if they know about it for sure. most don't know for sure so they don't assume and don't claim it.
