I've noticed a smugness amongst unbelivers & atheists, as if they've learned something new and world changing....NOT. Gnostics in the 1st century did some of the same stuff.

thanks for participating. I realize a lot of people are unsettled anymore when absolutes are given, and I wonder why. And as far as science goes... the complexity of the universe screams intelligent design

I know what you mean. In the bible though it says our knowledge is just a fraction of God's knowledge...there are some things the human mind is not ever going to comprehend, which is why science was invented (the big bang theory..Please). I know someone who is extremely atheist/agnostic and its really sad that he's so closedminded. I mean, people say christians are closed minded but then atheists are too, because they won't even open up to the possibility that there is a god. I don't know...they greatest of the commandments is love so I guess thats all we can do.

One could easily turn the tables and ask the same questions of Chrisitians. They have been making the same arguments for millenia. They're not original, and are only applicable (or logical) if you're a believer. All Christian arguments end with "Because the Bible says so", in some way shape or form as the ultimate 'proof'. But if you don't accept the veracity of the Bible, those proofs are pretty meaningless.

In addition, no one is more smug than some Christians. Whenever you try to have a serious discussion with them, they tell you you're going to burn for eternity in the lake of fire. Being SO sure that you know the mind of God, and that you can tell what is to be the fate for another being just smacks of hubris, a fancy word for 'smug' (and a sin as well).

I spent most of my life as a Lutheran; now I believe in God. I believe that Jesus was a good and holy man who would be an excellent guide for being a good person. But I left the church just because of people like you, who are just so sure they know the mind of God, that they can make judgement on others in the name of God.

Only God can judge. And I think (but don't actually know for sure, and neither do you) that some smug people will be in for a mighty big surprise when he does so.

yeah.. I guess u r right.. I can find some smugness ( a sense of accomplishment by being more intelligent. which is childish and ignorance) in our atheism. But if we haven't really learnt much compared to those of 1st century then still we have learnt something from history. World changing ( I didn't understand that.. we are minority still).
I am ready to accept any logical or rational points u can bring out of religion with all thankfulness.

Why would we? Obviously we aren't the only ones who believe there is no god. That "smugness" is simply the feeling that everyone else is wasting their lives and acting like slaves to a god, where we live each moment to the fullest. That has nothing to do with feeling like we know something new, simply, we believe something different from what is normal.

Original isn't the right word. If you go through the the development of religious belief you can see that our primitive ancestors tried to answer the Q who moved the clouds etc. and came up with a being up in the clouds. Today's believers are those who can't accept they are going to die and rot like all other living creatures and that will be the end.

I don't think that it's original, people have been discounting christianity with science for thousands of years. I just think it's right.

Anyway, It's not like there aren't a lot of pretty smug Christians around, like for instance this question.

I didn't realize I was. Sorry, I'll work on that. But I will say, the smugness goes both ways. You can't point a finger without pointing three back at yourself.

That is a good question.
The thing that amazes me is how athesits think I'm crazy because I believe the word of God, then they go on to tell me that there ancestors where monkeys???? I think it takes a lot of faith to believe that generations ago your family once swung from branches eating bananas and rubbing their pits. I guess if that's what they want to believe who am I to stop them. The scientific evidence isn't even solid on that though, it's just a theory.

Who said we thought we were original? We usually choose to not have a religion, whereas people with a religion are usually just following their parents. Do you think you are any less smug?

"WE'RE" smug? You people are so full of yourselves that it is positively sickening. We aren't the ones with little fishes glued to the back of our cars, or tying up 12 channels on the TV every sunday morning while we broadcast our opinion.
