In the early days of professional fist fighting, groups of fighters would travel from town to town challenging the local men. The fighters would arrange a few of the spectators in a circle and have them hold a ring of rope. Any man wishing to challenge one of the boxers would "toss his hat into the ring." The bout would then take place in this early boxing "ring."

I called it a box. I used to say hey those guys are boxing
in the box. Are you saying its called a ring? Maybe its because
they ring a bell before they start. I think they should call it a
ring box.

since 1862 it has been called that, it sounds better, such as pimp my ride is better than saying, fix it up and restore it and make it better than regular stock cars, well instead of saying a boxing box, "lame", its a boxing ring, which would be good to define anything surrounding some object making a boundry....besides opinion and thought there is no true explination
