small dogs are a challenge. Sometimes more than larger dogs because they are small and can get into anything. Play with them to build your bond with them. introduce them to your whole family. small dogs are very territorial and have their version of "small man syndrome" meaning they act more tough than they really are or could be. at 12 and 16 weeks, all sets of shots should be completed so they should be set for the rest of the year. Bathe them only once a month unless they are really dirty. bathing too often makes them loose the important oils in their skin and hair. Feed them a diet that is based on protien. Eukanuba, IAMS, and Science Diet are the only three kibbles I recommend. Look at the ingredients on the dog food; the FIRST ingredient should be some sort of meat. (Chicken/Lamb/Beef/Fish). They are a little more expensive, but will pay off better in the end. If you are going for a natural or raw diet, be careful as to what you give. No garlic or or grapes and NO CHOCOLATE. other than that, its common sense from there. Good luck.

The only thing that I can add to this is that very small puppies like yorkies need to eat more frequently than larger dogs. They have small stomachs and can't hold much food. Small breed puppies can easily go through bouts of low blood sugar. Several small feedings throughout the day will prevent this from happening.

One thing- smaller dogs generally like soft plush or very soft rubber toys. Their little teeth cannot handle hard rubber or bones very well.

Be sure to brush their teeth with a specially formulated toothpaste. Gingivitis is painful for dogs and dogs cannot have human tooth paste due to the fluoride.

Use a soft bristle brush to brush the dogs hair instead of a wired one.

Be careful when at an off leash area. Larger dogs can injure small dogs, even if they don't mean to.

Never give your yorkie ham! Really, our yorkie almost died because we gave him ham. He spent three days at the vet. Also, make sure you try to brush him every day otherwise his fur will get all matted and tangled.
