What do you mean by straightener? You mean a flat Iron? Or the chemical Relaxing treatment?

Flat Iron yes! Relaxer NO! Relaxer will damage your hair. Your mom is right the a flat iron can damage your hair, but you can take steps to minimize the damage. First get one that has a temperature control. Use the iron on the lowest possible setting that still straightens your hair. Make sure your hair is completely DRY before straightening. Use a good shampoo and conditioner and do a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Try to only wash and straighten your hair a few times a week. If you must wash everday then wear your hair curly a few days.

To let your mom know you are serious about taking care of your hair, tell her you want to talk to a stylist and learn how to care for your hair and how to straighten it. Stylist don't mind helping out clients and giving lessons or tips.

Use a ceramic ionizer iron. They can get pretty pricey but are worth it and work so much better than the cheap metal ones. Go to Sally's beauty supply...I would go for the "Hot Tools" brand. Very good. And also, if you shampoo your hair at night and straighten it in the morning, rather than shampoo and blowdry in the morning, this also cuts down on the amount of damage your hair will go through to look pretty. :)

try using a thermal protectant spray which will help shield your hair from the heat and really cut down on the damage. also use a ceramic iron which will help minimize the damage.

They really will fry your hair, try talking to her about getting some straightening shampoo.....you just use it like normal shampoo and when your hair drys it's straight, much healthier for your hair than a straightener....

yeah, it would damage your hair but if you don't do it too much and use hair care products, it would be ok...
