take a moist cloth that is soaked in water or alcohol and gently wipe the barrel of your iron down. hope that works for you.

Alcohol. Personally I usually use windex-eats thru the hairspray quickly. I've been doing it for yrs and I haven't noticed that it's ever damaged my irons. Don't use a scouring pad like SOS. It's scratch it (learned that the hard way!) In saying that-I don't recommend the tip about the butter knife, but scrapping a little with a finger nail here and there hasn't hurt.

They're many methods.
1. Rub roughly with a cotton ball & rubbing achohal. (You may also use some sort of pad...)
2. Moist towellettes, baby wipes.
3. Use a spray bottle to mist with water and wipe thouroughly with a napkin, tissue, or paper towel.
4. Soak the top part (when not in use or plugged in) in slightly above luke warm water for 30-45 minutes and use some sort of pad to wipe off any residue.
There are other ways that you can look up if you'd like.
